First off Welcome to Radioreference and scanning.
An area specific question such as yours will get more attention in a forum geared towards your area such as this:
Prairies and Pacific Coast - The RadioReference.com Forums You may even find people local to you willing to help even further.

This forum would be better suited for questions regarding Radio Shack branded scanners.

Again Welcome and have fun exploring.

Les

This has been discussed ad nauseum. Now that it is in the Pacific Thread, look through the numerous threads here as there are a lot of suggestions and places to buy them. Also, read the threads on the new Alberta wide radios system but at this time it is not known if CPS will move to this system. And there is a lot of rumours that the new system will be largely encrypted, so may not have much to listen to if the RCMP, CPS, Sheriffs, Fish and Wildlife, EMS, Fire, go that way. May not know until the system is fully rolled out in the next 2 years. As well, a lot of Fire and Public Works have gone to TRBO and NEXEDGE which no scanner available will monitor. TRBO, if not encrypted can be using a computer but this is also covered in various threads here. AFRRCS - Alberta First Responders' Radio Communication System - INFO HERE is info on the new radio system. Read the threads posted here and then post any questions on them and someone should answer. May take a day or two for someone to answer but I think most of the answers to your questions will be found in the various threads. As well, can look under the Uniden thread for an announcement tomorrow of a new scanner from them. What Digital modes it will cover is not known at this point. Won't be available until 2014. I haven't read much of the GRE thread but there is roomers of a Whistler/GRE new scanner coming out as well.
