Technician class licensees under the FCC callsign procedures can only get Group 3 (1 by 3) or Group 4 callsigns (2 by 3). Assuming KG1LFD is still available, you could apply for it as a vanity callsign. When the FCC processes your license application, they will issue you the next available callsign in the sequential callsign system. You could then apply for KG1LFD.
KG1FD is a Group 2 (2 by 2 starting with K, N, or W) callsign and is only available to those with an Advanced license or higher.
I don't believe you can select a callsign when you take the test for your first license. Since you don't currently have a license, I believe your only option is to accept the callsign that the FCC will issue you from the sequential callsign system. After you are in their system, then you can request a vanity callsign.

I will just ask when I go and take the test.
Thanks

The NCVEC form 605 has a box for your current call sign if you have one. That's not used to select one. When you pass you will get an FRN in the FCC ULS system and sequentially assigned call sign initially, after which you can apply for a vanity call sign. W9BU is also correct, a 2x2 (KG1FD) is not available to you until you become an Extra class in the current licensing, but you'd be eligible for the other (KG1LFD) as a Tech.I haven't took the 35 question test yet. In the ARRL exam prep book it says when I go to take the test and pass I could put a call sign that I want on the documentation. And isn't the vanity call sign a custom call sign that you can get after you already have a normal callsign given by the FCC?
How long will it take to get the vanity callsign after I request it?I don't believe you can select a callsign when you take the test for your first license. You are saying after they review the call sign and say yes I will get the new callsign in 18 days? From a very good summary on Vanity Callsigns
Here some facts about the timeline for application processing:
Vanity applications are usually processed on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Applications received on Monday are processed on Friday, 18 days later.
Applications received on Tuesday are processed on Saturday, 18 days later.
Applications received on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday are processed on Tuesday, 18 days after the Friday date.
Holidays occuring between the received date and the processed date don't seem to change the schedule. However, Monday holidays cause the Tuesday processing to be a day late.
Applications filed on Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday are marked "received" and date stamped the next business day. Applications are processed as a batch job in the early morning hours while the ULS system is off-line. If the batch job fails it may cause grants to be delayed.
Yes, they are not quick about vanity calls signs. They are done in batches based on application date. The 18 days is a minimum and you must already be in the ULS when receipt of the application. So you have to wait a week or so after passing the test for the license to show in the database before you apply. You are saying after they review the call sign and say yes I will get the new callsign in 18 days?
