It took about 3 weeks for my vanity to appear. Was KF5KEA now K5TJC.

In case any Canadians read this, all Canadian call signs issued today are "vanity". You choose when you register for your privileges, which you will do online just a few minutes after the examiner uploads your results to Industry Canada.

2+3 callsigns (i.e. aa0aaa) are all you can have at first. After five years you can apply to change to (or have in addition) a 2+2 (i.e. aa0aa) callsign for a $60 Cdn fee. I suggest keeping your old callsign and adding the new one, unless you don't care about having a 2+2.

No, the 17 day hold is mandatory.

This allows for sufficient time, once a claim is filed for the call, for electronic and paper filings to have a fair attempt at the call. If I put in for a call online, and the original call holder files for it, via US mail, the delay allows for the US mail guy to have his application looked at also... he'd get it, due to priority. Otherwise, the electronic filer would have got it, if they processed it as soon as it was received.
