• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I purchased a Motorola Quantar 800mhz repeater, installed the rss, created the modem, put in the 193.0.0.5 address and when I try to connect I get “ unable to make physical connection” I have tried on 2 different computers, 2 different cables and am ready to throw the thing in the dump. I have no one to ask for help other than you guys on here. When I attempt to do a swdl it gets started the repeater restarts and then I get must have active ftp connection. The RSS manual is useless when it comes to errors and I haven’t been able to find anything about either of my errors anywhere..

Hope someone can help.

SOOOOO I am confused are you simply trying to program the quantar or SWDL the station????

Have you tried restarting your machine? Sometimes the com port can be open in another window by another program and it will not connect.

I would focus first on just reading the radio rather than adding SLIP connections for SWDL. I would actually delete the connections you have made before you proceed.

As others have said, all it takes to read the radio is a cable and you hit read. I would google null modem pinout and verify your cable. I have made my own cables before as well as used a straight through serial with a null modem adapter.

EDIT:

As was asked before, are you using a serial adapter or does your pc have a built in serial port. This is important because if you use the read command without connecting first it defaults to COM1. If you are using an adapter it will not be COM1 and you will have to go to the connections screen and choose the correct com port and it will be a 9600 connection. The error you are seeing is a connection error. If you were using a straight through serial cable it would tell you that it doesnt know what type of device it is connected to.

So after reading all of the advice, I ordered from amazon a new NULL modem, connected and hit read. And it finally worked, now my quantar is up and running. Thank you very much to everyone!!
