hooked up to laptop in sentinel update firmware nothing shows that its connected bcd 436? doesn't seem to update data base either. Piece of Junk like i'm thinking?

Current Sentinel?, correct cable? Computer doesn't show radio? Then you may be correct, the computer is in fact a piece of junk...
One sentence to rule them all.
Slow down, and take the time to explain in detail what you are doing and what is it "not doing". Sounds like the piece of junk is behind the keyboard.

Obviously the 436 is a piece of junk and needs to be disposed of properly. Feel free to ship it to me to rid you of all the misery it’s causing you.

The computer and scanner is only doing what you are telling it to do.
With thousands of users for the scanner and software THAT ARE WORKING. You the user need to slow down and watch youtube videos and learn how to operate the scanner and PC you have.

OK I usually don't but send the junk to me and I'll dispose of it. Scanners don't work in MI. lol

In 95% of the cases it is 'operator error'....
Just sayin'...
Of course, there is always the possibility of equipment failure, but as everyone else above already said... chill and take a step back, I'll bet you figure it out.

Very hard to stump us...
It happens to me sometimes. When it does it, I switch cables. Fixes it most of the time. Reboot PC and power cycle scanner might help
Most all tech is a 'chain'.
Meaning, there is a chain of various components that all work together to make something work.
The radio, the SD card, the cable, the computer - YOU also.
All need to function to work correctly, (including you with setting everything correctly).
One does not work correctly, it all does not work.
Troubleshooting is a simple process of elimination.....

Friends laptop with latest sentinel has same issue! so must be user faults?
Could be. Still not any details.

yeah this happens scanner should be in USB storage mode then the software should see it try this use the software that came on the SD card OR an OLDER version of Sentinel

A computer sees the 436 as USB memory device and the 436 should respond with a message on its display if you would like to use mass storage mode or data mode. It could be the USB mini cable that are only done for charging and not for data.
To avoid that kind of issues you can get a $4 SD card interface and remove the SD card from the scanner and try directly on the computer. When and if that works you can try and look at the cable as that has to be the problem or the scanner are actually faulty. But instead of having it repaired for $90 you can use that $3 interface.
