Hello,

I recently seen a post where someone wanted to capture LMRN. My question is why? It is 100% encrypted with the exception of the Bell Mobility Radio talk groups. There is nothing to listen to.... why bother even programming it into scanners or DSD?

Some people just like the discovery and data part of scanning. Figuring out talkgroup patterns based on radio IDs and mapping out the use.

Unless you like listening to MTO, I don’t think there’s a ton of scanning happening. I’d say a majority are using SDR in this case for data discovery.

It also is a challenge to map out the system. Just because its encrypted does not mean that we cannot figure out some of what is happening. For example capturing the EMS station alert. This coupled with monitoring the local FD and even the OPP TG activity will give a good idea on the size of a call or even just letting you know a call is in progress. Outside big cities getting the EMS station alert and then a fire call lets you know something local is occurring.

If we had all just said its encrypted and let it go at that then the current data base of sites, talkgroups, radio Ids ( the system provides them for EMS and MTO) would not exist. In fact monitoring this encrypted system let us discover the talker alias (OTA) was in use. If this had not been done there would just be a single line in the database "LMRN Encrypted System" and nothing more.
