I have a friend that is going on the Carnival Conquest in a month. I have researched the ships frequencies and found 3 repeated frequencies:

Ch 1 457.525 91.5 PL Bridge
Ch 3 457.600 123.0 PL Security
Ch 4 457.575 254.1 PL Paging

Does anyone know if these are still active and used?

What is the paging channel used for?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

last reports are from 07.2010 for the ones listed at
Cruise Ship and Maritime Monitoring

Paging would be used for Paging. Just like what you would rent from your local BEEPER Company.

The land of broken calculators.
When I worked in a hotel, prior to the days of radios being affordable for everyone, we used voice pagers.
I started out with one until I worked my way up to a Motorola HT-90! Man did I ever feel cool then.
They were used primarily for housekeeping requests.
On a Carnival ship, I can only imagine what they're used for.

I don't see anything listed for engineering so I'd definitely keep my eye on the paging channel.

On my last carnival cruise almost 2 years ago to the day. I went on the onboard tour excursion which included the bridge, engineering room, BOH operations, etc. I asked the guide about communication and he said they use wireless voip. The voip uses the same network that they charge people to use for internet access. The posted frequencies that you found are reminiscent of days past. To my knowledge the pagers were used for food and beverage and housekeeping managers, they would get paged then have to find a phone to call whoever paged them. I don't believe any of those systems are still used. I sailed on the carnival glory, which wasn't the newest of their ships, and the tour confirmed no over the air communication was used, until they were coming into and out of ports. I plan on another cruise though, so if you find those frequencies are active in some way, please let me know!

Also.. if you have a kid who attends Camp Carnival, Carnival gives you one of the voip "phones" so that they can contact you if need be.

When I went on my cruise in February, radios are still used on Carnival Inspiration. I saw/heard many radios around. Didn't bring my scanner (I was in the dog house already... wasn't going to push it.)

From talking with the crew, there's also a "Fire Team" frequency used on all Carnival Ships.

True, a lot of the devices that they use are "radios" but they are not conventional, they are on digital 2.x ghz frequencies.
If I'm not mistaken, the radios and "phones" on the glory all had Cisco markings on them. This could vary from ship to ship I guess, depending on what ships were upgraded, i would guess a good rule of thumb is if you're ship has at sea wifi, they probably use voip communications.

YMMV but in my experience, they continue to use two-way, however when Line Crew are out-n-about the ship with the General Population they change over to the On-Board phone system

Many ships began using these, long before adding Wifi for cruisers
