Hey Folks...

I used to have a couple scanners back in the day, but in CT all the locals went "digital encrypted" so , I gave up on it and used my iphone app for those one off situations to hear local fire.

Now that I have recently moved to NH I want to get back into it and my research seems to how encryption is not implemented here.

So my question would be: What would be the best scanner for the Carroll County area? I am not up to date on all the trunking / digital specs on scanners, so any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for both a portable as well as a home unit.

Thanks in advance.

Depending on your experience and funding, the Uniden BCD325P2 is the best all around P25 scanner for ease of use and cost. There is no trunking in Carroll County (except maybe business DMR) so it's pretty straight forward.

The two models after that w/more bells and whistles would be either the BCD436HP or the SDS100. While I'm not promoting Scanner Master as a vendor, it's a decent site to compare products.

Those mentioned above are of the portable flavor. Most, if not all, have base/mobile models as well.

Also check out Scan New England for frequency info.

Hope that helps,
John M

You may even want to buy a used x96XT scanner. That of course depends on what you are going to do with it. That is, if you plan to travel around to other New England states, a higher level scanner would be a better option.

John M knows just about everything worth knowing about scanning in NH, but I'll add a couple of comments. Most of the state is VHF, with a few exceptions. Most police agencies, if not all at this point, are P25 conventional. Most fire agencies are still analog. Nashua and Manchester are on P25 trunk systems on 800Mhz. Manchester is heavily encrypted.

EMS is mostly on VHF and analog.

As John said, there is great information on all of New Hampshire at Scan New England.

Don't be fooled. Gary and a lot of folks know more than me. I'm just good at BS LOL.

Gary's got a good point though. There is some decent used or older model stuff on the market.

The Wiki at Scan New England is likely to be more current.
