According to a Olean Times Herald article the Cattaraugus County Legislatures are going to have to come up with an additional 1 MILLION dollars to continue work on the Dispatch System..In the article it says that this additional money will allow then to complete the NEW FIVE CHANNEL VHF DIGITAL Simulcast..Which it states will allow broadcasting and receiving of BOTH the High Band which is 154.325 and the Old Low Band 33.700...So is there now going to be an Additional 5 channels that a Scanner that is capable of decoding a Digital Signal such as the Sheriff on 159.405 will be able to monitor Fire and EMS????

Happy Election Day, by the way.

anywho...
Little Valley is finally trying to get in to the 21st century with its radio comms. Good for them, and good for the end users who rely on this system day in and out.

Sounds a lot like what Oneida County, NY is attempting to do with $7.5 million ($3m of it from a state grant) replacement of an outmoded EDACS trunking 800 MHz network and a fairly new NEXEDGE trunking UHF network and put all those users on to the VHF band that the rest of the county presently uses.

So, wouldn't a VHF simulcast system basically be the 5 towers that all key up on 154.325 countywide? So now Portville can hear when Gowanda goes out to a call, yay! Digital doesn't sound right and/or necessary - yes City of Olean I'm looking at you. Nor would it work to get the tones out to activate pagers. Have you ever heard what analog tones sound like on a digital transmission? Think modem noises!

I've been gone from Catt Co too long now to even know what's up there these days so if anyone else closer to the source knows better that I, please elaborate. I'm curious to know. Thanks!

I thought Oneida County had joined CNYICC. If so, then the UHF system will be P25, not NEXEDGE.

not to hijack a Cattaraugus County thread, but Dave to my knowledge your guess is as good as mine with the Oneida County system. I first heard VHF P25 trunked, then heard UHF P25 trunked that may or may not be CNYICC based.

and to keep this on topic, I doubt Catt Co would go UHF trunked. the only UHF in use for public safety are the MED channels. VHF trunked would be interesting, and of note didn't nearby Wellsville try to do that back in the early 2000s, which out of that phoenix came the Allegany Co VHF hi fire channel?

Cattaraugus County would have difficulty changing bands because of its proximity to Canada. Between that and the hilly terrain, their frequency choices were probably pretty narrow.

cOuntyb0y and DaveNF2g, the thing also is that Cattaraugus County Has or will have spent 7.5 MILLION dollars on this frequency conversion. AND yet Many of the local volunteer Dept's are still stuck having to foot the bill THEMSELVES to purchase radios and Pagers. Or find a what I call a Lottery style of a Grant to purchase them. What is also so Shocking is that Wyoming County and Also Allegany County have Both COMPLETED the conversion to the 155 band split, with little more than a few minor inconveniences... I am hearing Both Counties loud and clear on their respective frequencies and What do I hear from Cattaraugus County??? Very Little on either the High band or the Low Band...7.5 Million for what???

You'll have to ask the politicians who are signing the checks. The amount spent probably has very little to do with what the necessities of getting a system built would actually cost.

saw this from another thread in this forum:

Cattaraugus for VHF P25 Phase 1 LSM TRS
WQWT223

looks like a trunked network for fire/law/ems most likely, but not DPW?

cOuntybOy, Catt. County has always left each individual Fire Districts to be on their own to pursue whatever grants are available..Or, each fire Department. While the article you posted from the Salamanca Press is interesting...$10K grant...well big whoop... 2 mobile radios...The Legislatures still don't quite get it... figure 2 mobile who gets them??? The chiefs of course...not apparatus...so no help really there..Most departments have at least minimum 4 apparatus as required by NFPA...2 engines, tanker(s) and Brush truck or rescue style and possibly a ladder...So they say $10K would cover 2 so there is still $20K bill PLUS to outfit all apparatus still.. and Lest we forget...

The vollies need PAGERS!!! As of right now figure in area of 20 per department..20 is a round figure for active members give or take..As of now what is the cost of a NEW Minitor 6??? Roughly lets say $400 per..so that's $8K that each department has to find funds for...so by my math and depending on how many apparatus and active ..The Departments still face at Minimum around $28K to get them outfitted properly with radios and pagers.
.
As far as governmental grants..UGH...I heard one department got denied due to the fact that the radios they currently have are too new..They replaced radios as needed due to them breaking and because they did that got denied a grant...by that logic the apparatus should not have had any radio in it in order to get a maybe grant!! Something that isn't guaranteed...Where's the common sense in that???? They nitpick to death and because the department has newer radios for safety, etc..got denied!! Unreal.

over the weekend, was in the area to visit family and take in the Bills game at the Ralph. brought the ole trusty scanner with me (it's the RS equivalent of the PSR600), a Kenwood TK2170 with receive only Catt Co fire programmed in, and a Unication G1 pager with Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, and McKean Co fire controls programmed. where I was at for most of the weekend, in proximity of the Interstate near the county line, heard more Allegany County transmissions that I did Cattaraugus. of what I did hear in Catt Co, most of it was off the Olean/Allegany area transmitter sites so my listening ear was quite deaf, in my opinion. a few observations:

* has low band fire been completely turned off? not a peep on 33.70.
* do all fire departments use 154.325 for dispatch/alerting? is it not repeated for some reason or is the county trying to mimic what 33.70 was?
* Olean City FD dispatch is P25 - and yet I heard tones, that sounded awful!
* speaking of tones, did 911 switch over to Motorola from Plectron flavors? didn't recognize any of the "new" tones for familiar fire departments.
* law MRD of course now is P25 conventional on the same frequency, and again maybe it's just because of my listening post, but only heard units in the SE corner of the county; I had expected to hear all cars countywide (simulcasted).

while there, I did hear two fires dispatched - the Ischua Five Mile Road call Sunday night and the Bolivar Main Street call Monday morning. listening to Little Valley was "hit or miss" (in fact was right next door to a fire hall that was called mutual aid to the Ischua scene!) yet Belmont was coming in loud and clear. I'd be horrified as a fire commissioner if my district had to pony up thousands of dollars to replace pagers and portables/mobiles for a system that, to me at least, seemed "hit or miss" with reception.

it's too bad that it still seems like the "politics as usual" ideology is still alive and well in Hazard, er, um, I mean, Cattaraugus County.

cOuntybOy,

here goes to answer all your points...33.700 is Still active and in use, Catt. County, dispatches all departments on both 33.700 and 154.325. Am not sure why you didn't hear a peep on 33.700. A thought, maybe your NAC was off on that frequency??? At one point durign the conversion from Low Band 33.700 to 154.325 you could hear ALL radio Traffic, dispatch, chiefs, apparatus, etc. that no longer is the case...not sure why..Yes OCFD has converted over to P25 and it does sound AWFUL. Here's a interesting tidibit...Ischua's tones got changed during the conversion process and their OLD tone set apparently is no longer being used on Low Band 33.700. Apparently all departments now have new tone sets on the Highband 154.325. Another tidbit on that...for some goofy reason Salamanca's Tone set on the Highband 154.235 is VERY CLOSE to Franklinvilles Low band tone set on 33.700 also. I am clearly hearing most all units countywide on My HP-1 on the Law channel 159.405.

I had to chuckle a bit as I have told some Chiefs how Catt. County should be ASHAMED that the Radio system HAS NOT been completed and all Departments aren't on the Highband Yet. I used your same comment that how Come Allegany/Belmont and Especially Wyoming County/Warsaw have converted over and pagers and radios Distributed to all Departments. And they Can be heard CLEAR AS A BELL over their respective highband frequencies, done deal and Catt. County still is nowhere near completion. The name of the Radio Service that is working on Catt. County is widely known on the net and I think they are using Catt. County to stay in business and dragging this out as long as possible. Whereas the services that Belmont and Warsaw utilized for their conversion GOT IT DONE AND DONE RIGHT and Moved on...The proof is in the pudding...we can prove it by just listening to their respective frequencies.

One more comment on the conversion..I find it quite ODD that Warsaw was able to convert over and they were able to migrate their low band 46.18 tones to their new Highband 155.6700 and Yet Catt. County has to get all new tones...Answer me that...LOL.

Lewis County in Northern CNY just migrated over from low band fire dispatch to UHF trunking with a VHF Hi paging channel that repeats all fire dispatch traffic too. all tones were migrated from the low band console to the trunking console. so it is possible!

all i can say is that if I were still around town and involved there in the fire service like generations before me were, this wouldn't of happened if I were on the county's radio committee. someone sold them snake oil and they bought it. doesn't Jack Serales have the presence of mind to sue these liars!?

wow, good luck, and hopefully no harm comes to any first responded because of it.
