For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Smoke another one john.
Try as you might, even if you could claim fame to all that knowledge WHY would you want to waste it on the resources required to put a asstard station like that on the air in the 1st place??
I'm not going to sit here and spout off about all my previous years and experience as a technician because frankly it doesn't matter. What DOES matter is that you want to add your drama to an otherwise pointless and ILLEGAL activity anyway!
The only thing you have said that's correct,is that I am a tech level licensee. I am happy being only a technician because I ALREADY HAVE all the privleges I desire, because I don't LIKE the hf bands!
Most of the hf bands sound so much like cb,that my decision to upgrade was soured long ago by people who THOUGHT much like you and knew even less! Read a book doofus!

If you don't like HF, or cb - why are you in this thread? If you hate the HF bands including cb, you should stick to the other topics like the amateur forum UHF/ VHF threads. Maybe your an in the closet cb'er with a tech ticket. In that case you have to come out of the closet, and admit your love for 11 meters before I take another one of your posts in this forum seriously. (I'm not holding my breath)

For one thing, John, you are the one that is high. The only thing that I tried to tell you was that such stations are out there, nothing more. You, took it to the next level. Another thing, if you would have read what I had wrote in my previous posts, you would have seen that I don't engage in such activity anymore; I guess that you need to take a remedial reading class, so that you may improve your reading comprehension and have a retention of the facts that were laid out for you in plain English.

Like, I said, and I will reiterate the fact for you: there are many 15kw-20kw stations that operate on any day that there is skip. Again, I have seen many of these stations with my own eyes; Bird watt meter certified. Look on You Tube, John, you can see many of them in action. Where I am from (Battle Creek, MI), there were many 1kw amps on the air. I don’t know anybody that ran barefoot. I know that this is falling on deaf ears anyway, John, but I just have a problem when people talk about something that they don’t know about. If you would have understood what I was telling you in the first place, this would not have went this far. You just want to tell me that I am wrong, when I know for a fact that I am right!

I do agree with you on one point, John; some people put ridiculous amounts of money into it. As far as resources put into my old mobile station: I only gave $400 for my big amp and my driver amp only cost me the parts (around $50), as I am the one that built it. My radio was a Galaxy 88 that I was given because it wouldn’t transmit -- one 2SC1969 and I was back in business. My alternator mod for my Geo Metro only cost me $75 (amazing what you can do with a MIG), my capacitors were only $40, and an extra battery cost me $50. So, no, I did not spend very much money. Heck, I paid more than that for my Yaesu FT-857D that I run in my mobile, and my Kenwood TS-2000 cost 3X that.

I don’t see how you think that HF is like CB! I have seen more BS on VHF FM than I have ever heard on HF. I operate mainly on 75m and I have only had a couple of encounters with buttheads in nearly 10 years. I don’t care where you operate, you are going to encounter trouble of some sort. I operate all bands, John. I like to talk to people, so I use whatever band I need to accomplish this.

The interesting thing, is that you are insulting CBers in general on a forum with a bunch of them! Who is the doofus? That would be you, John, as you are the one bragging about being a snitch, you don’t want to listen to somebody who has been there, which you also want to be cocky about something that you don’t have a clue about! You want to talk about how it is pointless, then why do you want to run your mouth about it? I am not trying to add drama, John. I just don’t want people filled with misinformation from somebody that has never dealt with the subject. If it wasn’t for your thinking that these big amps don’t exist, I would not have said a word. You could have bragged all you wanted to about turning people in. Still, I would have kept quiet. However, once I see something that is completely false, I am going to say something. Once I said something, you had to run off at the mouth telling me that I was wrong, when you have no experience in this area whatsoever.

True, there are people on the CB that claim to have really big amps, when they don’t. However, the big stations on channel 6, 11, and 26 are telling the truth when they say they have 10kw+ amplifiers. This is the only thing that I was trying to pound into your stubborn brain, John. It just peeves me, John, when I am confronted with a cocky attitude from somebody that wants to preach misinformation. To some, this may seem trivial. This is one of the things that I see wrong with society. That is, misinformation is allowed to continue, since it may hurt someone’s feelings. I am not one of them, John, if you are wrong and I have experience in that area, I will say something. I don’t care how trivial it may seem.

Oh, and somebody else made a point. If you don't like HF, what in the Hell are you doing on a thread that is dealing with those topics. I am here because I like to see if there is something to learn, or to help people that are looking to learn.

Oh and learn how to spell, John: "I am happy being only a technician because I ALREADY HAVE all the [SIC] privleges I desire, because I don't LIKE the hf bands!" That is spelled "privileges." And put a space after a comma, for one it is hard to read, for another it is proper English.

In closing, John, I will reiterate the points for you again:

1: These multi-KW amps operate daily!
2: I have seen and operated them personally!
3: I did not spend very much money playing that game!
4: I don’t play around with this stuff anymore! (this is the one that you seem to miss)
5: I know what I am talking about!
6: Trivial subjects aren’t trivial if the person is spreading misinformation!
7: Nobody likes a snitch!

I think that about covers it.

......I guess that you have never seen a Chevy Suburban with a 454 big block, running nitrous just to spin the alternators when the amp is keyed. Well, I have. We are talking about a race built engine, with a big cam, ported heads, single plain intake, huge carbs, and the whole nine yards. Drag racing and engine building is another one of my hobbies, so I know how to build these engines as well........... I ran all of this in a Geo Metro with an extra 200 amp GM single wire alternator -- the alternator was mounted to a homemade bracket and was above the hood with a scoop over it. I also used a battery isolator, 2 batteries, and a 3 farad bank of caps. When I keyed down I would have to bring the car up to about 1500rpms (about the point a 1 wire GM alternator kicks in). This idea came from my knowledge of high power car stereos.

Pics or it didn't happen. Did the Geo drag the ground too?

Nothing special

Pics or it didn't happen. Did the Geo drag the ground too?

Chris:

The Geo I had was nothing special. I just added some batteries, another alternator, and some caps. It just looked like a normal car. There was just a bubble scoop over the second alternator, which only stood up a few inches above the hood. Why would I even bother to take pics of something like that. I never have been one to take pictures anyway; I don't even have any of my current home or mobile stations. You can hear me just about nightly on 3840kHz, or close to it.

John:

I do tend to talk a lot, but I am good at it. I never claimed to be a "rocket scientist," far from it. I am good at a few things, and one of them happens to be RF engineering. Your ignorance and stuck-on-stupid mentality has been hard to deal with. You won't even concede because of your own conceit. I, myself, am not conceited, John. I know something and you just won’t accept that you may be wrong. If you don’t care about such things, then why did you respond in the first place, and continued to do so? I know why, you just decided to show that you know more than somebody. I responded to your misinformation, nothing more. Those big stations are out there, that was the only thing I was trying to pointing out.

I have been all over the Internet, John, and I have read many of your “Holier Than Thou Art” post on many different forums -- if you were any farther to the Right, no one could see you anymore. If your nose was any higher in the air, you would drown when it rained. I see what kind of a person that I am dealing with. One that has an answer for everything, and one that is never wrong. I know I can be wrong, John. I never said that I know it all, far from it. Having a very well rounded education is the only thing I claim. Still, I never claimed to be perfect! You threw the first stone with your arrogant attitude, which I pulled out the fully-automatic stone thrower. I don’t take any BS from anybody, John. Especially, from an old man that thinks because they are older they know it all. You were the one that, basically, said I did not know what I was talking about; not the other way around. I just tried telling you otherwise and you got huffy. I guarantee, without a doubt, John, that there are many things that you know that I don’t; this subject is not one of them, however.

In closing, John, you are the one that came onto this thread and started to spread your crap without a basis in fact. You had no business telling anybody your misinformation. I still want to know, John, what is your experience with CB? How did you come to your conclusion that there aren’t any 10kw+ stations on the air? You have no supporting facts, John! There is support for what I said all over the Internet. You cannot make claims that are not supported by fact.

Another thing, John, how many 5kw+ stations are on 20m,75m, and 160m? This one would shock you. I know of a few in southern Michigan, Illinois, and quite a few in California. This is about all I have to say to you, John. I know that breaks your heart. However, I am wasting my time on an idiot that doesn’t listen to the facts. This would have been so easy to rectify, but you want to live in your own little world where nobody exist, except YOU! You still seem to miss the fact that I only run legal equipment now. I DO NOT OPERATE HIGH POWER CB STATIONS ANYMORE! I hope I clarified that for you.

Nitrous to run the alternators??? Drag racing engine in a Suburban? OK.. I've read enough of this garbage.

I have to go back to work in the land of the real. Was nice reading some of these posts though. I really did enjoy the pissing match (to an extent).

BTW, haven't dragged in a while, but I used to drive this during track days (left and right turns, lol):

Suspension and brakes, all modified but still a heavy pig of a car.

I like both of those cars, James, but I am partial to the Mitsubishi over the BMW. I have played with many different cars, but for some reason I always end up going back to a Japanese car. No, I never dragged a Suburban, lol -- I have seen it done though! However, it is the same theory that they build these engines on. Heads, cam(s), and intake, this is what makes horsepower! I can squeeze horsepower out of anything; my Nissan 1.6L double cammer in my Sentra is over 250hp, which may not be much, but in a 2400lb car this is smokin', and it still gets 30mpg! I played around on the road courses quite a few years ago with a modified Camaro, but got bored so I sold it.

As far as the nitrous power big blocks to run amplifiers, I never went that far. I feel that it is a little crazy! People thought that my 3kw mobile was a little bit out there.

And, John, yeah, I may be wound a little tight, but morons tend to do that to me. This is the last thing that I will say to you: You need to realize what I was trying to say. Like I said, you threw the first stone, not I. You basically laughed at me when I told you and everybody else about these stations. I did not insult you until you acted like I was the idiot. You were doing nothing but trying to show to other people that I did not know what I was talking about. You and your case of anal-cranial-inversion, is the problem with this world. You want to think you know it all, and then pass your misinformation on to others.

Again, why are you on a thread that is talking about CB? The last time I knew, CB was in the HF part of the spectrum! Close to VHF, but not quite. If you are so soured on HF why are you a HAM anyway. You just wanted to play on VHF and UHF like you did in the public safety field? I like VHF and up as well, John. Like I said, though, I use all bands. If my radio covers it, I use it to the fullest.

I'm still laughing too,and I don't think I'm the only one.
To answer your question...again. WHY upgrade to extra when those privileges that are allowed when they would not be needed? I tend to favor the bands 220,440 and 900mhz.as well as gmrs.
Aside from the international sw broadcasters I have no interest in hf. Besides, the antennas needed are physically larger than I like and the bands are usually much too noisy. I took and passed the extra practice exam mainly out of curiosity and nothing more.
You amused me only because of your detailed presentation of the glorious mega-watt super cb moguls that seem to exist in your world. They don't exist in mine. I never had to turn anyone in to the authorities either.
They were taken off the air by other means, usually without my help.
I'm done with this topic. enjoy your cars.

I never tried to glorify these stations, but rather just point out that they existed, nothing more. About the only thing that I am doing now is putting together a legal-limit mobile for the low bands. Trust me, John, your VHF and up is useless out here in an emergency. There are places here where you are 100 miles away from repeater coverage -- not from the repeater, but from where you can hit a repeater. And, cellphones, yeah right. I use HF for this purpose. I would guess, John, that you are going to tell me that is BS as well, and you have a VHF radio that can bust through 200 miles of mountains! This is the most isolated region of the lower 48 states. There are places where public safety's radios won't work. All I have to say, is HF, Baby! With 40m I can cover this whole region (and beyond) in the day, and 75m will cover the whole US out of my mobile at night.

Yes, VHF has it's purposes. It is great back east, the left coast, or a populated area. However, out west it is worthless in certain areas of the Intermountain west and Great Basin. The sparsity of the population play a major role, but mountain chain after mountain chain makes VHF+ very hard to use. There are some repeaters on the taller mountains in Utah. This helps, but if they go down in the winter (when they are needed the most), forget it until maybe June. And, then they are close to populated areas anyway; kind of defeats the purpose. HF, using NVIS, keeps on truckin'.

Antenna size? My 75m inverted L is not that big at all. It may be big compared to a VHF or UHF antenna, but is still small. My mobile antenna is 11' long, quite a bit smaller than most high gain antennas for VHF and up! Shoot, I have worked over 30 countries from the mobile (barefoot) on 75m, and I am up to four on 160m from the mobile. Listening to a frequency without static takes all the fun out of it. Plus, my TS-2000 has damn good DSP.

You still did not answer a question, John. I know you have the right to be where ever you want. However, why are you on a thread that is discussing CBs and DXing on them? If you hate HF, other than being a SWL, then why even say anything. Is it just to show your disgust?

I have ran out of steam dealing with this, so I guess that I will be civilized for a while! You just had to find a nerve, John, which you just kept pressing it. Like you said, I talk too much. Again, I am good at it, and can do it with grace. I am not diplomatic, however, as I just don't give a crap who I peeve. I see you feel the same.

And, John, I think you and maybe a couple people are laughing. I have received quite a few e-mails from people to the contrary of your opinion. Your passing of the Extra practice exam, John, just proves one thing... It is true, a monkey CAN do it! Just kidding, you are a couple steps above that in evolution!
