Having loaded the cd-rom into my new Hew Pack pavilion laptop and attempted to do upgrades, I followed the directions to hold down the menu button as I re-inserted the USB plug. The screen shows "up Boot Ver:F1.0 up Appl Ver:F1.1 CPU SW Upgrade: Waiting for USB. That results in the screen locking up despite unplugging the USB cable at both ends {one end into laptop USB and one end into the PSR USB port} and reinserting them both. I'm not the sharpest knife in the draw regarding all this, so any input is appreciated.

The first thing .. I would try to use the EZ_Scan software to see if you can program the scanner. This would ensure that you can communicate with the scanner properly. I would do that far before trying to update anything.

As you say this is a new laptop .. that is your best road. Once you can do that, I would do the update.

Oh, there is really very little need to update it anyways, unless you monitor an Edacs system unless you have really really old firmware in it right now. There is a thread here at RR re this update.

You do not need the CD .. that is old. You want to go to GREAMERICA.COM and download the latest version of the software. The firmware is included in the EZScan software.

Good luck .. it is not that hard once you are able to confirm that you can program the scanner.

I would recommend that you go to Device Manager / Ports to see what com port the PSR800 scanner is using.
