If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have been trying for two days now to program different zones into my CDM 1250 radio using the software and I am having no luck. Basically, I’m trying to create one zone for 2 m repeaters, where I can just scan those repeaters and then create a Weather zone where I can just scan NOAA weather frequencies And then create a third zone where I could just scan VHF marine frequencies. Is this possible and if so, can someone please walk me through it I am using software 6.12.05.

What do you mean you're having no luck? What is the issue?

Scroll down to the bottom of the tree and click on "Personality Assignment to Zone".

That should give you one zone you can put your ham repeaters personalities in.
Click on the Green + sign on the bottom, that'll add a new zone to the bottom of the list. Add your NOAA personalities to that.
Do that again and create a third zone. Add your VHF Marine stuff to that.

That’s where I must be doing something wrong. I am able to add another zone but for some reason I cannot get channels into that zone. when I right click on it it gives me an option “add to end” and that’s it and when I try to do that, the channels will not go into the zone. Also, I am unsure how I will be able to set that up to scan. I only want to scan the channels when I am in that particular zone. In other words, when I am by the lake, I only want to scan VHF marine frequencies. When I am in my hometown, I only want to scan those repeaters.

you have to add conventional personalities to the radio, prior to being able to add them to zones.

Once you have them populated , you can use the green plus at the bottom of the Personality Assignment to Zone X of Y tab to fill the zone assignments out.

Create your individual personalities. One personality = 1 channel. Create the number of zones you want. Use the “+” tab. Under each zone you will add all the slots for the number of channels you want. Right click and select “add at end”. Do this for each channel you want in that zone. Once you’ve done that, go to each individual slot that you created in that zone and select the personality from the drop down list under “channel” and choose which personality you want for that slot.
Create the number of scan lists you want. Use the “+” tab. Open each scan list and scroll over to the tab marked “list”. Add the specific personalities you want in that list under the “personality” tab.
Go back to each individual conventional personality and select which scan list it needs to be associated with under the “scan” tab.

Thank you to everyone! With all your help, I was able to program my zones. One final question, I promise, can someone please help me understand the different scan list? I thought once I created the zones, it would scan whatever zone I was in and only that zone? If this is not the case, how do I make the radio only scan the zone I am in at that time? Or to say it better, only the channels of the zone that I am in?

Make 3 scan lists.
Assign appropriate channels to the correct scan list. It'll only scan the list that is assigned to the channel you are on.
