I've been hearing alot of activity on the 2992 "emergency bridge" talkgroup.

It sounds as if it is being used as a link between ems and pd. Does anyone understand the distinction of when/why it is used and how this is used differently than the mutual aid talkgroup?

I'm not really sure either. It sounds like (from what I've heard) its between dipatchers where the mutual aid groups are more for inter-agency comms and units in the field.

Thats correct Jon. The supervisors in CMPD Communications work on something called the Bridge. This is actually a slightly raised area where they can oversee the 911 operators on one side and the dispatchers on the other side. The bridge emergency TG is so the supervisors can talk between CMPD, Fire, Medic and CMS communication supervisors for coordination. It is not available to the normal dispatchers.

In a related area, it is not unusual for a police dispatcher to yell out loud during an emergency (such as, "There's a shooting on North Tryon.) to alert the communications supervisors and the other dispatchers. It is just one more way to try to get all the telecommunicators and supervisors on the same page.

TG 2992 - Bridge 4 (Emergency Bridge)

There is not just one comm center in Charlotte. MEDIC, CMPD and CFD all have their own comm centers. CFD and CMPD are both in uptown. MEDIC communications is at MEDIC HQ on Statesville Rd.

Bridge 4 is a common TG b/w MEDIC Communications, CFD ALARM, CMPD Communications, N Meck Communications (Huntersville, Cornelius PD), Matthews PD Communications (also dispatches Mint Hill PD).

I can't speak for all comm centers, but here at MEDIC it's on EVERY radio console. Any Telecommunicator can access it or answer it.

It's primary use is a common TG b/w all the comm centers in the county. Because CMPD, MEDIC and CFD interact a lot with each other on calls, you'll hear them more often.

It is also used to coordinate communications when there is a radio system problem or upgrade in progress. Radio Services uses the TG to communicate with the comm centers.

Just to follow up,

I heard the Baker 2 dispatcher call Medic on Bridge. So it appears that the individual dispatchers may have the ability to use it.

CFD comm center is located in Station 1 in Uptown. They have 4 main dispatchers on at a time with 1 or 2 supervisiors over seeing them. Nice setup with the tracking and everything for it. Cool toys in there.

I thought I might shed a little light on the "bridges" as they are called. The bridges are used as an inter-agency communications talk path....meaning that this talk group doesn't exist in 8) field units. It is for one dispatch agency to talk to another....whether it is CMPD to CFD or MEDIC or Union County or York County. This was just a simple way for them to talk across wireline consoles without having to pick up the phone to talk to another dispatch agency.
