Would like to find someone to talk/chat with about Charlotte area scanning. Have a 436HP that replaced a 396XT. Using Sentinel to program the 436. Just wanting some questions answered on simulcasting (doesn’t seem to be a problem where I am), Viper for this area, and many other questions. I know there is a lot of scanner knowledge in the Charlotte area from reading the past posts.

I'm from the Charlotte area and monitor there frequently. What are your questions? Drop them here so they can be answered with multiple perspectives from multiple people.

Thanks. Listening to Police, Fire, Medic, and Viper each in there own FL. Do you load the control channels in for each favorite list? Have the closest Viper towers loaded. Hearing Gaston county but have no idea which tower they are from. When a talkgroup shows up under Viper with no description.why and what am I missing? I am in Matthews and just using a 800mz antenna, but the simulcast does not seem to be a problem like others talk about.

If a talkgroup shows with no description it is because you are listening using a wildcard, TG descriptions do not come from OTA they are programmed in the radio/scanner/pager by the user. As for simulcast, if you are listening to Viper they are not simulcast, however Charlotte UASI is, I do not have issues with my county simulcast system for the most part when I'm home, but a half mile in any direction I miss 75% of the traffic. It's all about location.

Thanks. So the wildcard talkgroup must be coming from a Viper tower I have loaded, but not the city Guess I am lucky with my home location, but seldom carry with me. May try that to see if it is a problem.

Viper TGs can roam, some statewide others to neighboring counties, they also can be heard if someone on the tower you are listening to affiliates to that tower, meaning if someone turns to the channel with that TG assigned, then you may hear Raleigh traffic or somewhere else on the tower. There is a wiki page on RR with the Radio ID numbers to help you identify the users.

If you are listening to Gaston county, they use a simulcast with VIPER. 1 of the 2 counties currently doing this on in the state (so far). As @RaleighGuy said, location is everything for simulcast systems. Charlotte UASI is also simulcast. Since you live in Matthews and possibly listening to Gaston county, that's a pretty good distance, so you might only be getting one tower and simulcast distortion won't be an issue. As far as no descriptions showing up that is a programming issue and I am not familiar with programming those scanners. Also, Gastonia operates on the UASI system while the rest of Gaston county operates on the VIPER simulcast. Hope this helps!

Keep in mind that Charlotte area emergency services use the UASI Security Initiative trunking system other than VIPER. It is in RRDB with all the info. Fire and EMS are in the clear with most traffic.

Yes, have no problems with Charlotte UASI. Use the maps for the Viper towers to see which ones overlap the Matthews area.

Hi Rick,
I'm not far from you, closer to Providence Rd. For Viper you should have good luck with the Heathway Rd. site. If you are in Matthews you may not have too much of an issue with simulcast on the UASI system, since there is a tower in Matthews near Independence and Sam Newell. I'm equal distance between the Matthews site and the Park Road site, and simulcast is an issue here, you may be ok.

Thanks Rick for starting this thread. I also have a 436HP question. I am trying to find a talk group on the UASI system. I placed my scanner in close call mode, then was able to have someone key a walkie on the talkgroup I am trying to identify. the walkie was in close proximity to the scanner. The display only showed the frequency that was being transmitted. Is there a way to get the display to show the talkgroup? Thanks all

close call only shows a frequency...you want to put the scanner into ID search, not ID scan.
