Sheriff’s deputies escorted approximately 63 residents from their homes in Chihuahua Valley in Northern San Diego County overnight and an evacuation order remained in effect for the community Friday morning because of the Chihuahua Fire in the area. At 10 p.m. Thursday, a Reverse 911/AlertSanDiego message was issued to the community telling residents to prepare for evacuations. Fourevacuated residents went to the a temporary evacuation point the American Red Cross established at Warner Springs High School, 30951 Hwy 79.

Earlier , at 5:40 p.m. Thursday, the emergency alert system advised residents to shelter in place but be ready to evacuate. At that time, evacuation was not possible because the fire made Chihuahua Valley Road impassable. Residents were later allowed to evacuate using the road with a sheriff’s escort, but the road remains closed Friday.

CAL FIRE strike teams worked through the night on the Chihuahua Fire, which was sparked by lightning Thursday afternoon. Friday morning, CAL FIRE said the fire was 900 acres and 5 percent contained. No structures have burned, and no injuries have been reported. Please call 211 for more information.
