Hello,

This is my first post to RadioReference about this issue.
I have a UV5R and a UV82-HP. Both were gifts (love free stuff).
I have recently been attempting to call CQ over the local repeaters (Rutherford Co and Wilson Co) as I live north of the Boro. When I depresse the PTT, it sounds as if the radio is dialing out but I still can not transmit. I can receive fairly well with a rubber duck. Just trying to nail down the issue as I am taking a trip and would like to try and make contacts on simplex once I am there. Any help in resolving or helping or understanding would be great. And yes, I used CHIRP on both. Is me trying to hit the repeater the issue? Should I go simplex only?

Thanks!

What repeaters are your trying to access? Several of the machines are now Fusion or DMR. Double check settings for the correct PL tones and make sure the proper transmit offset in entered. As well as setting the offset, make sure it is set to either negative or positive offset depending upon the repeater. As of two days ago I heard the usual ones that are still analog and all were working.
I use the Wouxon software and it is easy to miss a step. Never tried Chirp albeit many folks love it.
What is your ham call sign?

Not to discourage you but calling "CQ" on a repeater sort of marks you as a newbie. Announcing your call and saying you are listening is one way of letting people know you are available. When you say "dialing out" what do you mean? When you let up on the mike do you hear or see the receiving light indicating that the repeater heard you? Most repeaters have a squelch tail or courtesy beep. Have you heard people talking? Most ham repeaters are fairly quiet. You might hear more activity during morning or evening drive time.

Again letting us know where and which repeaters you are trying to access would be a big help.

Are you hearing DTMF tones? It sounds like you probably have PTT ID enabled.
There is no telling what random DTMF tones will command the repeater controller to do. It could be muting your audio. This is not a good thing to do on a ham radio repeater. It could get you banned.

Make sure you have Menu 19 PTT-ID in the radios set to OFF.
It is also a good idea to disable the stupid roger beep and the STE tone.
Make sure menu 39 ROGER is OFF and menu 35 STE is OFF.

See Baofeng UV-5R - The RadioReference Wiki for the settings to disable in CHIRP. They have different names than the radio menu items.

Since they were gifts, try putting a simplex CSQ frequency in them, and see if they talk to each other. Then add tone. If all that works, check your local ham facebook page, they may be having issues with the repeaters due to the weather lately or something. If all of that fails, there is a subforum here that deals a lot with chirp and programming, they might be able to help. I am in the wrong end of the state, or I'd meet you somewhere and try to get it hammered out.
Good luck!

Turning off the roger beep was one of the first things I did. I hate hearing them at work. ID is also turned off. Thanks for the link to the additional information. Yes I am new, hence why I am having problems. Lol.
