It sounds to me like you really need an outside antenna specifically tuned to 800 Mhz. I have an 800Mhz yagi pointed towards the Springfield tower and I am getting 5 bars on my 996XT and I live almost in Champaign County. The only traffic that I miss is the same traffic that dispatch misses also which is mainly handhelds being used indoors in outlying areas. If I try to receive the system with my 800Mhz stubby inside my house, I hear almost nothing. An outside antenna with low loss coax makes all the difference. Have you tried receiving the SO off of the London tower? You might give that a try.

tac groups

how can one tell if any dispach channel is being diverted? If it is encryped like OSP how does one know? Ive tried to follow OSP on aircraft enforecemnt and when they go to Tac I hear nothing. What way do you determine hwo tac channles are being used. I hooked back up the 800 stubby, placed the two tac channels back in scan group to see if it improves. My signal strength is minimal four bars on Springfield tower.
Imtrying to come up with a combo to get a decent signal for 154 ad this 774 yet my high band sacrifices on the man supplied antenna. Too cold to climb tower to hook up multiband!!
Maybe Im getting better reception on London area tower than Springfield due to proximity, but I am glad you mentioned busy traffic off Dayton tower. Time to play w it more!!Happy New year all

Your 996XT will ignore any traffic on an encrypted channel. You won't even be able to tell there is traffic on one. I also have a 996T and it will stop on encrypted traffic and put out digital noise. The only TAC channel that is in the clear is TAC 1 which is on talkgroup 10500. It will do you no good to program any of the other TAC channels. If you are getting 4 bars of signal, that should be enough to decode properly. Trust me when I say that there has been very little traffic on the encrypted channels since the system went on the air. BTW, there are at least 5 TAC channels being used. Four are encrypted and TAC 1 is in the clear. Hope this helps.

Also, attempts to adjust a telescopic whip to get good reception on both VHF hi and 800 Mhz may be futile. A whip for VHF Hi would be about 18 inches high and a stubby for 800Mhz would be three inches or a little less,

signal strength

after moving it another few inches, yes inches and putting 800 rubber duck on I placed all the 5 freqs back in andI am now getting anywhere from 4 - 5 bars. So maybe my screwup caused me to lose track of some freqs. I was of the belief only one control channel would be rec'd yet when I watch what its picking up I get multiple hits on different freqs.Unknown if London tower is being picked up.
But now that I am getting this I DO FIND a lot clearer reception not breaking up so I guess I didnt have all in that I needed.
Come warm weather I was wondering can I feed a hi band and Yagi feed into splitter to feed both antennas into one to get better reception or is that gonna cut down on one or the other. I hate to only offer fire freqs for eastern clark when so much goes on with Bethel and Enon on Interstate 70

OK Kinfolk I did not realize that that was a difference in 996 XT over t. I am planning on getting a 396 XT to take with me when I go out. My programmer has helpe me set this 996 up and I can clone the 396 and have it hear to monitor SO only. Thanks for the encrypted info and as with OSP I dont even scan Encry channels.With five bars not its hard to believe a few inches can make that much difference.
Are Champaign County going to upgrade to new radios as Clark did or are they taking narrowband route??Sometimes they have afew good calls. I remember when tehy and Clark used to share a main repeater channel. Thanks for the info!!

You will be only receiving one control channel. The other frequencies that you are seeing are voice channels. Since you are getting 4-5bars with the 800 Mhz rubber duckie inside, I would suggest putting up an omnidirectional multiband antenna outside. I think you would get better results from that rather than trying to feed two antennas via a splitter. The yagi definetly would give you much better reception on 800 Mhz. To see if you can receive the London tower, you would have to program that in on a separate system on your 996XT and see what kind of signal you get. The frequencies are listed in the RR database.

It is amazing how much difference just a few inches can make in 800 Mhz reception. Champaign County has already narrowbanded all their VHF radios. The last I heard from anyone up there, they presently have no plans to move to MARCS but that could change with time. It will be interesting to see if the City of Springfield makes a move to MARCS. I know they were considering it a few months back. It would be nice to have them on MARCS and their dispatch channels in the clear. I listened to them for over 30 years before they went to ProVoice on 800 Mhz.

I recall spending hours with the guys at Station 1 in the Hole as they dispatched for County and City Units. Then when they upgraded to UHF thought that was special.
There were some good times on the old fire channel,what with Mac, Roger, Grumpy, some of the old firemen long since retired or gone...

In my opinion, Bob MacDonald was the best dispatcher of all time. I miss his booming radio voice.

Clark County SO Talkgroups

Here are the confirmed talkgroups for Clark SO;

10519 = Dispatch
10500 = TAC 1 (in the clear)
10506 = TAC 2 (encrypted)
10509 = TAC 3 (encrypted)
10514 = TAC 4 (encrypted)
10503 = TAC 5 (encrypted)

Dispatch is able to go to TAC 1,2, &3. They are not able to go to TAC 4. Not sure if they can go to TAC 5.

New info on Clark County SO

Clark SO has been experiencing difficulties getting out with their handhelds in the western part of Clark County on the new MARCS-IP system. As a result, MARCS will be building a new tower at Wright State University in northwestern Greene County in the near future. Also, the MARCS-IP system for Clark County will be added to the existing MARCS tower in Troy, Ohio. This should improve coverage in the western Clark County areas.

The P25 system doesn't send site alias names. Not sure why that feature was deleted or isn't used, but it isn't there. Best bet for the database is to re-use the alias names from old MARCS, if you have to use one at all.

Thanks for the new info. I have heard a brief transmission on talkgroup 54525 from the evidence van. Talkgroup 10501 was used quite a bit when testing the system before it went into use. I have heard no further activity on it since. Talkgroup 17501 would be for Fayette County SO.

That is interesting that Springfield Township FD is interested in going on MARCS. They just spent over $140,000 a few months ago to narrowband their high band equipment. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

Has anyone heard anything further about the City of Springfield moving to MARCS?
