Good find. Thanks! I love old maps, partly for aesthetic reasons, and partly because they frequently have details that have been deleted or changed on newer versions (for a variety of reasons, none of them good).

While searching for maps I came across this great 1953 USFS map of the Saugus district.

Daddy loved your post! He has a file drawer full of these old black/white/red maps. A few have dried out so badly they can't be unfolded. He had been on permanent a couple of years by the time this map was made. I was still the apple of his eye by a few years then. Thanks so much, we all (Mom too) talked all about those maps, Daddy's jobs in the early 50's, the birth of my older brother and marriage/homes of the time.

Am hearing fairly strong handheld radio activity on TAC-5 (167.1125). Unsure of their location but will assume CNF for now. May just be work crews. Last Wednesday they were active along the South Main Divide cutting down and removing invasive bushes.

Heard mention of Engines 10 & 12 and also a reference to the "Crest" so it looks as if these crews are somewhere in the ANF.

Comms 27 was active in Cleveland today but I missed any mentions of what he was up to. It's good that maintenance on the radios is ongoing.

The LEOs have been pretty active with the usual tasks while patrolling both the dirt and paved roads within CNF.

Interesting note about the impacts of Covid-19 on USFS operations and comms. At 8:14PM Cleveland dispatch announced they were shutting down for the night. I am still hearing comms and LEO activity in SBNF.

Comms 27 is working on CNF repeaters today and was talking to Patrol X. He asked Patrol X to go to Forest Net tone (?) and in the radio it would be "Group 1 Channel 3"

I'll keep listening for any other info about the channel lineup.

Recently CNF reopened the gates on South Main Divide road that runs from Elsinore Peak to Los Alamos Road to Tenaja Falls. The Wildomar OHV area is still closed to the public. Recently there has been a lot of interesting radio traffic related to law enforcement. I won't discuss the intercepts in public but if CNF is one of the areas you like to monitor the Trabuco District has been busy.

Heard some LEO activity this AM regarding damage done to private no trespassing signs. Seems CNF WildCAD doesn't show LE activity, whereas FICC (San Bernardino Fed) and ANF do, but without many details.

BB911 - Thanks for reminding me about WildCAD. I finally grabbed the resource list and dropped it into Excel and then converted it to a PDF. See attached if interested

For those who do not watch PBS, we have a hidden gem in San Diego!

Ken Kramer [a ham radio op, like many of us!] has a 30 minute program on KPBS entitled, "About San Diego". It's a show that airs 4 or 5 segments each Thursday evening about hidden---and many unknown places---of great interest in San Diego, both current and historical. You LA and OC folks can watch the show on Ken's website: www.kenkramertv.com

One segment he produced back in 2012 is about a CNF lookout at Los Pinos Fire Lookout in the east county. Norm Mitchell, the very knowledgeable but soft-spoken fire watcher is profiled.

KPBS [apparently] did their own show of the lookout. I just found it this afternoon. See what you think:

P.S. If you go to YouTube and search "Fire Tower/Lookouts", there are many stories with similar views, fire personnel and fire stories.

Thanks Alain! I just watched the video. Back in 2016 a friend and I hiked to the tower at Tahquitz peak and had a nice tour of it

Thanks for the WildWeb PDF conversion. I don't know how to do such a conversion, but now know that it can be done some I'm going to fiddle with it a bit.

I sometimes follow these resource status pages. The Cleveland and a few others put asterisks next to some of the units. I don't recall, but I don't think I've seen these types of notations in other regions other than R5. The Cleveland has not only has the single asterisks, but : **, + and ^. I wonder what they mean. I'm guessing that EMT and forest protection officer level law enforcement has something to do with it. Also some might be Type 3 or Type 4 incident commanders and some might have CPR certification. My Daddy really wants to know what these are. Anybody else have guesses?

Hey, I've gotta ask, why is this thread in the LA/Inland Area forum? The Trabuco Ranger District is split between Orange, Riverside and a little bit of San Diego Counties. The remaining Ranger Districts are in San Diego County, with a handful of square miles in Riverside on the Palomar District and the the largest district, the Alpine RD in SD Co.
