When you say you tried scanning in different places how far did you move the scanner? Just a couple feet or into another room? You may want to try another house/building too. If you have access to another scanner of the same make/model see if the click is on that scanner too. I agree that it sounds like some kind of interference as the clicking goes away when you remove the antenna.
