By Coatesville Fire Department April 21, 2011 On April 21st 2011, At 4:59 am the Coatesville Fire Department along with an Engine from the Westwood Fire Company were dispatched to the area of Saginaw Drive in Millview for an odor investigation outside.
Ladder 41 and Engine 43-1 made the response at 5:01 and were advised by the 911 center that the caller reported smelling smoke in the area but was unable to see anything. Ladder 41 and Engine 43-1 arrived in the area at 5:06 to confirm the odor of smoke in the area but also were unable to locate the source.
Ladder 41 advised Engine 44-5 to check Brick Street for the source as the wind was blowing from that direction. Ladder 41 quickly found the source of the smoke as the stair well in the 18 building of Saginaw Drive had been consumed in flames and was quickly spreading. Ladder 41 advised the 911 center to upgrade the assignment to a working building fire. Engine 43-1 laid a supply line and deployed a 1 3/4 handline to begine fire suppression while Engine 44-5 quickly arrived to supply Engine 43-1 with water.
The Upgrade added two additional Engines from the Sadsburyville Fire Company crews were then advised by Ambulance 41-1 that there was also a dumpster fire in the apartment complex. Assistant 44 Scott arrived and assumed the "Saginaw Command" advising Engine 31-1 to handle the dumpster fire. Chief 31 Grossman arrived at 5:26 am and confirmed the working dumpster fire and advised Engine 31-1 to pull a 1 3/4 handline to extinguish the fire.
The building fire was placed under control at 5:29 am and the dumpster was also placed under control at 5:36 am with crews checking the fire building for possible extension. Interior Crews reported back to the command that there was no extension from the point of origin. Saginaw command requested a response from the local and state fire marshalls offices.
Crews stoodby at the scene while the county and state fire marshalls offices conducted an investigation. Once the fire marshalls concluded their investigation Asst 44 Scott terminated the command making the units on the scene available at 7:23 hours.
