At some point they are going to have to realize kids are taking advantage of this right? Every time someone breaks wind with in a few blocks of the school it's closed. Then on the nightly news the kids who want their 15 minutes of fame get there ugly mugs on TV.

How about if they catch you making a fake threat to a school, they kick you out of the school and the district? Maybe a few nights in the no tell motel? Then maybe a kid who does not want to go to school might think twice?

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Columbine High School was evacuated Thursday morning after the school received a series of bomb threats.

The students and staff were taken to Leawood Elementary School. Clement Park, where the memorial to the Columbine shooting will soon be erected, has also been evacuated.

School officials say Columbine will be shut down for the remainder of the day while bomb squads sweep the school. Parents are being asked to pick up Columbine students at Leawood Elementary School.

Jacki Kelly with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said that the caller started making the threats at about 9:30 a.m. and has called several times since then. The caller said he wanted media attention, Kelly said.

After the series of phone calls, the Jeffco Sheriff's Office felt it was necessary to evacuate the school as a precaution, Kelly said.

The bomb squad and sniffer dogs are currently inside the school checking to make sure all is safe. They have conducted several sweeps, 7NEWS reported.

One parent told 7NEWS that early on, students were asked to turn cell phones off, which may be fairly standard procedure in a bomb situation due to fears of electric transmissions.

Please note that 7NEWS and TheDenverChannel.com do not typically report bomb threats, but because we have been receiving numerous phone calls from concerned parents, we felt it was necessary to update everyone with the information we have and let parents and those concerned know that the students are all safe.

Kelly did not know whether the caller made reference to the April 20, 1999, attack by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, who shot and killed 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

"Most of the threats that have been associated to that school made reference to past events that occurred there," Kelley said. "But a bomb threat to a school is as serious at any school as it is at Columbine."

She said the threat was being handled the same as other threats elsewhere.

The school has about 1,850 students, said Marlene Desmond, spokeswoman for Jefferson County Schools.

School officials expect Columbine to reopen Friday. Students who have cars in the school's parking lot can hopefully pick up their cars later today.

One student told 7NEWS that the calls were a prank and that there was another prank at the school Thursday morning when someone released a bunch of bees in the cafeteria.
