I recently had to replace my hard drive and reinstall XP. Now when I try to install programs that feed radio output to my soundcard, I'm seeing error messages that say no COM ports can be found. What do I need to do to install COM ports and what resource is available to help me do this? Any help appreciated.

What specific programs are you trying to run? You know that a COM port is a physical thing, right? Does your computer actually have COM ports? If not you will need a USB-Serial converter...

Com ports available

Uncomplicated answer.

Click or press the Windows Logo button to get to the START button.
Right click on MY COMPUTER.
Click on PROPERTIES.
Click on HARDWARE.
Click on DEVICE MANAGER.
Click on PORTS (COM & LPT).
This will display what are available com ports and lpt ports for that computer.

Do you mean a serial port? A computer can have com ports without having a serial port.

COM ports can be a virtual thing, too.

HW VSP (Virtual Serial Port) - Free Virtual Serial Port to connect any TCP/IP Terminal server to your Windows as a virtual serial port

Serproxy Freeware

I use this method to send the RS-232 data through a proxy (serproxy) into TCP from my scanner plugged into the desktop, then out on the network the data goes into my laptop (which lacks a COM port) in the virtual COM port software and the scanner software doesn't know a thing.

When I want to access the scanner remrtly any where in the world, the TCP data is tunneld into SSH through the router using DD-WRT.  So is audio! I have a small stand along app that streams audio in TCP form instead of UDP. Packet size, around 19k. Anyway.. lol
