I'm on the other side of AVP (west of WIlkes-Barre). I know the Clarks Summit area. I'm in the Back Mountain area.

OK so I just figured a few things out. I was able to catch a carrier name and flight number. I jumped on flightaware.com and it turns out to be a flight going from LAX to JFK that was currently close to being over our area. I only understood "descending from 390" and sure enough on flightaware it said the aircraft was at 39,000 feet. I caught another one and it was a flight from St. Louis to LaGuardia, also passing over our area. The flightaware site is amazing. You can not only track by carrier and flight number but also by tail number or specific airport.

Could the frequencies I listed above be for JFK or LaGuardia?

Fascinating!

111.6 ATIS (automated wx for the airport)

ATIS "Automated Traffic Information System" is more than just WX, just a FYI.

ATIS also gives out any reports of equipment failures, closed rnwy's and txwy's, gives the current operating runways, special notes, and NOTAM's.

The best thing to do, IMO, is just keep scanning the unident company freq and listen for the planes to identify themselves at the start of the converstation. Then lookup the arrival/depart flight info from your airport. Most of the time it's on their webpage. I live about 23 miles from our airport and receive the air side just fine, but no ground. Thinking about getting this antenna: http://www.grove-ent.com/BEAMII.html and mounting 30-40 ft up.

This is defeniately a step in the right direction. I know a person who has this antenna and its the best investment they made for an aircraft beam. I would love to try one out someday!

Sorry Fuzzmoto, got a little confused in the thread as to who was where. You are within the New York Center. Phidelphia is in the Washington DC center. Quick correction. the website with a ton of info is milaircomms.com

Interesting site. I've improved my reception (details in the antenna forum) and now I'm hearing all sort fo air traffic. Most of it seems to be traffic out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. I've been correlating any carrier/flight# or tail #'s I can hear and most are over me (some not so close), but I assume that they are so high I'm easily picking them up. Interesting stuff. Now if I can only figure out what exactly they are saying and who exactly they are talking to.

Hello All
This thread is getting better and better!! I would like to find a list for the central/south areas
of Florida. I am fortunate that I can listen at work as I am a security guard (Rent-A-Cop) and
night shifts get a mite long. My local airport (KMLB) is closed from 0000-0600 local time. At
times, even the police/fire systems are pretty quite. I usually use a PRO-89 and a PRO-95 on
the job. The good thing about the two is that they use the same power sources.
Wish everyone a Merry Christmas even if you have to work. I haven't had a Xmas at home
in the last couple of years!! Oh, well; I knew that when I became a security officer!!

I just started scanning the 108-137 area and you can easily pick out what is air traffic. If you start checking what you hear against flightaware.com you'll be able to see what flights you are hearing. From there I can roughly figure out who they are talking to. If you're lucky enough to be close enough to hear the tower I'm betting it is even more interesting. So far I can't hear the airport itself. On Sunday we had some snow roll through and I believe JFK and LaGuardia had some sort of divert going on. We heard a ton of airline conversations and flighaware was showing all sorts of circling over our area (which explains the increased traffic).

Bottom lins is just to keep searching those frequencies and see what you hear. I was checking for the frequencies of my local airport but most of what I hear is air traffic actually going to Newark, JFK, LaGuardia and even Philly...not my local airport.

Excellent...thank you. Now I can hear JFK tower AND the planes flying over my area talking to JFK. I'll try it out tonight when I get home.
