I'm a newbie coming from an old Pro 39 from a long time ago. I just decided to get back into the hobby and I bought a Uniden BCD436HP. I installed Sentinel and made some favorites for Lake County Indiana. I'm having trouble understanding all of the new systems compared to the old days and it seems like I'm missing out on police calls and replies to them. I know Lake County is P25 and I programed it from the software. I see in the database that the Control Number is 774.71875c. My question is in Sentinel where am I Supposed to see this number and the Alternate Numbers listed in the DB? Also is this something I should even be concerned with?

I presume you are referring to the control channel frequencies.

On a trunked system, those frequencies are in a Site attached to the system. For a trunked system, you have the system's name, which you can see in Sentinel.

Expand the system by clicking on the '+' (plus sign) just to the left of the system name. Under the system you would see any Departments (which are the talkgroup ID's (TGID's) programmed. Also, you will see any sites programmed. Click on the site name to select it, and you'll see the frequencies in the right hand pane of Sentinel's window.

For a trunked system to work, you need both the TGIDs, loaded in one or more Departments, and at least one site with the frequencies for that site. You can have only the control channels in the site (primary & alternates), or simply have all of the frequencies for the site. For Harris P25 systems, any site frequency can be used as a control channel. Some rotate that regularly, some do not. That depends on how the system was set up. For Motorola based system, you have a primary control channel, as well as one or more alternates.

You can program your systems by appending systems from the main database, entering manually, or having Sentinel create a Favorites list for you using your location, range, and service types.

Thanks Steve...It's making a little sense now, good explanation. So if I add a list from the DB I shouldn't have to concern myself with it, they should already be in there somewhere.

Yes. When you create a Favorites List from the database section, all the correct "stuff" (control channel frequencies, talkgroup IDs, Locations, System Type) are brought in.

It's almost paradoxical - radio systems these days are more complicated than days of old, but with computer software, programming scanners to receive them has never been easier. Just a series of mouse clicks and you are in business.

Thanks ofd8001, yes with my Pro 39 years ago I bought a book from RS with all the frequencies in it and sat down and entered all of my frequencies by hand, what a pain it was. Now I have to try to figure out why I'm not getting any of those Ambulance to Hospital calls like I used to get back then, if that's even possible but that's a different thread.

On the ambulance to hospital, most if not all of those comms are encrypted for patient confidentiality. If you look at the database here on RR, you will see 5 TGID's showing DE. I'm sure that is what they are doing in your county.

In Columbus, those frequencies have never been encrypted. There is no patient-identifying information on the air, only medical information. No one listening to the broadcast hears anything that might pin it down to a particular person. In any event, I think there's a HIPAA exception for those circumstances. That said, they still try to keep it on the down-low. In several decades of LE and scanning, I don't recall ever hearing a patient's name on the air.

Maybe they figure you could hear the address and Google it or something like that to get the name.

Nobody as far as I'm concerned, I tried to edit this post and I couldn't find a way to edit it maybe because I'm new to the forum I'm not allowed to edit yet. But it's no big deal and it just came across as a dumb joke :0

In southern California, the media will routinely associate the unit assigned to the call with the injury reports going into the hospital, and which hospital - especially on high profile incidents (Officer-involved-shooting, etc.).

I understand that gossip and the paparazzi have become an industry in California. I don't think that matters.
