Proper XBR operation

Yes, the Kenwood TM-V71A and Kenwood TM-D710G are the only two XBR (cross-band repeater) mobiles I know of, that can transmit their ID on both the VHF and UHF sides when set up as an XBR. And that's important, because a properly set up XBR must transmit its ID every ten minutes, either manually (you sit near the XBR and take it out of XBR mode and transmit on each band), or automatically. Simply using an HT to voice the ID to the XBR does not satisfy the ID requirement, so you're on the right track.

Also, the frequencies you select should be repeater (input or output, as defined by your local band plan) frequencies, not simplex frequencies. And of course you should take the appropriate precautions to prevent interference with repeaters that might be set up on any of your chosen frequencies, so it might be wise to contact your frequency coordinator and ask which to use first.
