Install question

I guess the question is do you want it visable or more conceled ? Ky being a state with little regard for scanners I have located mine in the same spot the last 3 crown Vics I have had. I mount under the ashtray at the very back against the heater, I then run a simple hot wire first to a toggle switch I always locate on the inside of the ashtray/cup holder slide out, then of course to the radio. By locating properly I can shut down by simply pushing the slide tray in to its closed position. The only problem with this mount is I cant access the radio if I should hit a birdie but since it works so well I just accept that issue. If I have to turn it now quickly I just turn it off by again closing the slide tray. I use a bc350c and have no problems with memory being lost. It is pretty cool to just flip the toggle and hear the traffic.
Also since its out of sight it is safe from prying eyes no matter their motives.

It's probably the best car on the market to install radio equipment in, as there are numerous manufactures of read-made consoles, mounts, etc, for that particular car. Try to find one with bucket seats up front, not the bench seat. Then be sure to go to ebaY and get yourself some of those Ham Sexy "POLICE INTERCEPTOR" name plates!

A quick Google search will find you many sources in addtion to what "RR" members come up with!

I would get a Havis Shield Console and put it in there.

I would however remove all police emblems even the interceptor one. They WILL and DO draw attention. Also rip out the spots.

I think they're required by law to do this before the vehicle is sold. Even normal company vehicles like "Joe's Lawn Service" have to do this.

The "Police Interceptor" could remain however, as it does not identify the vehicle as a "Police Car", just that it has the "Police performance package" from the factory.

They're required by law to do that here in California, also, the man who I'm buying it from repaints them (usually black) so you can't see the spots on it. IF HOWEVER, I did buy another vinyl (I have no idea why) I would have to indicate that it is "out of service" or "movie vehicle" inside of one of the windows. When CHP sells a vehicle, they will take off the lights, vinyl, cage, gun locks, and computer holders. They'll put the original back seats in, and it's good to go. They DO however, leave on the whip antenna (remember CA is on a VHF-Low freq range), the spotlights, the pushbar, and the siren/PA system speaker. Weird, huh?

If you are just mounting a scanner, then mount it under the cupholders/ashtray. I have mine mounted in a console with my other gear. I am thinking about removing or replacing the CB. My Cobra CB sucks!

Too funny!

CHP leaves all those accessories on the car because each new car is outfitted with new or very refurb'd speaker, lights, pushbar etc and the new car comes with spotlights. Same goes with the NMO mount on the roof for the lowband antenna. It also appears that the interior half of the two glass mount antenna's are also left in the car.

They sell the cars with the used stuff since it's not gonna be reused anyway. If they do remove the metal, it ends up in a scrap yard in Sacramento.

Lights, no... They put on a Federal Signal Vector Vision lightbar on it, or if it's gonna be a slicktop they'll put in a mirror mounted LED and LED arrowsticks in the back. Tax dollars at work.... a Vision lightbar will run about 800 smackers.

I read in a back issue of Police Fleet Manager that the CHP doesnt re-use the custom made pushbars because thye are too bent to be re-used. Consoles typically stay, at least in the retired CHP SUV's ive seen. Lightbars, etc come off. If one radio is defective, they part it out.

So what part of my post wasn't clear? I'm not talkiing about leaving lights on the old cars. When a new car is upfitted at MTS, the lights are either new or refurb'd with new domes, bulbs etc. I'm well aware of the equipment that is being used. Been there, done that and got the T-shirt(s)...literally.

CVPI is also correct. The radios CHP uses haven't been made for over a decade, are no longer supported and are customized to CHP specs from 1987. When one dies beyond repair it becomes a donor for others.

Back to the scanner installation discussion...

I think they are still being built by the prison system, so there's not much $$$ involved anyway. I wonder if they are marked with "Inspected by inmate #7653425" :D

Here is mine in my 1997 CVPI. All are mounted in a ProCopper 1050CC console.
