Well if you think the SDS is complicated try using the actual commercial DMR radios, you could always get yourself an XPR 4550 or 5550 and the MotoTrbo CPS and see what's involved in programming those...

The OP wants to learn we know how I think we can help him understand the DMR Systems and how Unidens receive them.
Start slow...name 1 system you want to listen to. Are you using Sentinel?

Are all those DMR systems missing from the database? You're only 20 miles from the Chicago area and should have lots of already configured DMR systems in the database and you only have to do "Append to favorite list"? If you have found DMR systems by listening, and are not referenced to in the database, you can try to ask about additional info in your local RR forum.
If users haven't reported any talk groups in a system in will sadly be totally missing from the database and you cannot do IDSearch yourself to find them. You have to program the system configuration from scratch.

Yes, Sentinel. Very few listings for Lake County Indiana compared to what you find in digitalfrequencysearch.com, quick import. Going to try one at a time.
You might find unlisted DMR systems via Custom Search too. Schools, businesses, bus companies etc. might not have been identified. It takes a little more effort than appending with everything there.
Digital frequency search website uses data from the FCC. It shows the emissions code that it is licensed for, but it could be still analog or some other digital mode. Often the emissions that is licensed can be wrong.
Also, an easier way to monitor DMR is with an SDR and dsd+ fastlane. Enter any frequency and will display digital mode and the flavor. Remember, both DMR and NXDN have several flavors. DSD+ will display that.
I like to use scanners and SDRs together as a tool. I will use a scanner to scan through a range or set of frequencies. Once I find a digital frequency, enter it into dsd+, discover mode, trunking flavor, slots, LCN, etc. Then, I use the scanner to listen to the frequency or trunking system to identify the users.
It just takes some time to discover all the info needed

Are you serious, I wouldn't waist maintaining a FL for a single system! My FLs are by county (most people who are either in DC or a stone throw away are in receiving distance of 7+ cities and counties) and everything in the county is in that FL. I manage monitoring by service types. To each his own...

So this takes more effort than just pulling it in from the RR database using ProScan?
OP chiming in here. First and foremost, thanks to everyone providing input. Viewed video's from someone I thought was a reputable source. He, like Aaron Rogers, did not lie. (Rogers "immunized"). I'll stop there. Explained how to populate a fav list with DMR frequencies from a 3rd party list. It worked just as stated. However, that's where it stopped. Leads me to believe everything is there and ready to go. Obviously not true (in my area anyway). What do you do next? It scans but doesn't receive because it's missing something. Like many others here, my first scanner was a multiband public service band radio. Had to manually turn the knob/tune to the frequency (late 60's early 70's). Crystals were easy although it sucked waiting for them to arrive via US Mail. Went to Radio Shack to get the updated "Radio Call" book of updated frequencies. Programmable scanners were the best. Simple/fast/easy. The toughest part was "what bank do I put it in"? Then the world changed on 9/11. Communications as we knew it changed forever which brings us to today. Now I'm trying to figure out how to listen to channel I pretty much didn't know existed. Sure, would love to "append to fav list", however, apparently not the case now. I will try to figure this out through searches/logging. Don't quit to easily. Plenty of resources out there, just need to choose the correct one(s).

I can relate to the OP. And it's not so simplified as willing to "work" or not. It's that at a certain point, it's not as fun, or fun at all, anymore.
Did you create it on your own? If so, you have to make sure the Monitor and Download is ON under the Edit..Edit Profile tab in Sentinel. Service Type also has to be ON.

To the OP, I feel your pain. The database radios are a hassle, especially with the "service type" thingy. If I custom program my own radio, just scan the stuff I put in! Who cares what "service type" it is!! I've been using Uniden scanners for a long time and I really struggled with the programming on a 436. Worked on it for about 7 - 10 days with both Sentinel and Proscan. I sold it and got a 325P2. I have 2 BCT 15x's and 3 996p2's. I have no simulcast, so they work great. This probably doesn't help you much, but I understand your struggle. I wish you luck. Hopefully you come out better than me.
