I just bought a PRO-99 and I have a PRO-83. I was just wondering what would be the best to listen to the Air Band. I live about 4 miles away from Danbury CT,06810 and I am never able to pick up air.

What would be the best combination to get air? Antenna and Scanner wise?

While it's true the ScanTenna will work, it may very well be too much antenna for those 2 little handhelds. You might end up hearing more pagers and other junk that just doesn't belong there. The reason is simple - those handhelds are designed to work with small antennas that don't really pump a strong signal into the radio. They're just not designed to handle it.

A much better - and far cheaper - way to go is to build a simple ground plane. The 2 meter design that's shown on the first link of the tech section of ...

is easy to build and shouldn't overload those little handhelds. About 1/3 down the article is the formula to figure the correct lengths - cutting for around 125 Mhz (instead of 145 mhz) or so will do the job nicely.

I would expect that you should be able to hear the approach/departures of aircraft from the Hartford airport. Since we don't seem to have that info on the RRDB, check Airnav - or even better, the Ct. forum here on RR or ConnScan on Yahoo. You're simply too far away to hear the tower comms.

For handheld antennas, the RH77CA from Diamond or the Maldol AL500 are 2 that seem to get rave reviews. Both have links a little down the page from the tech section I mentioned earlier.

Ok.. this may be alittle off topic.. but here goes..

Is there a way to talk from ground to Air or Ground if u dont have a call sign like a plane ID?

Any specific Frequency?

Well i do have a Restricted Aeronautical Radio Operator Licence.. But i dont know how to identify myself when using the handheld radio?
In Air or when in plane on the ground.. i can use the Aircraft ID.
