I have two BC-780 scanners I haven't used for years. They were programmed with Butel software on an old computer using (I think an old version of Windows). Is there anything currently available to program with my current computer using Windows 11?

I was just going to ask the same question. I have a BC-780 that I'm going to use specifically for the air bands. I'm also looking for programming software. Basic programming from the radio keypad isn't to bad. The alpha tagging can be tedious though. Programming software would be a big plus. Thanks in advance.

Try your Butel software. It should work.
Butel's software for the 780 was 16 bit only. Windows XP was the last that supported it. If you wanted it under Windows 7, you had to use Windows XP mode in Win 7.
ARC780 has since been discontinued. Discontinued: ARC780 ARC2 ARC3 ARC8000 ARC5000

Proscan supports the 780 for both, programming and virtual control under all modern versions of Windows.

@Mojaveflyer and @TRGNM, ProScan is what you need. To see just how good it is, do the 30-day free trial. If you have any questions about ProScan, you have a lot of ProScan users here to help you out. Even the author of the application, Bob @ProScan, is a frequent visitor here and will also give advice when necessary. I feel confident that you will really like ProScan once you see what all the application can do. Let us know if you have any questions.

Do you have ProScan communicating with the scanner? If not, I would get that going first.
Before doing any database operation, open a database file by going to the Menu --> Database --> New(or Open)
Since this is the first time, choose New, then navigate to where you want the database stored, then type in a name, then click the Save button.

Yeah that's pretty definitive. I thought perhaps through a compatibility mode or something. I will second, third, fouth, ProScan.

"Sorry these products are now discontinued after 20 years : ARC780 ARC2 ARC3 ARC5000 ARC8000 because they will not run on windows 7/8/10/11."

Another solution is similar to Windows XP Mode, and that's to run old windows in a VM (virtual machine) on Hyper-V, ESXI, or Proxmox.

Oh boy. A $50 software package to program a $20, 25 year old radio. I was afraid of that. Anyway, thanks for all your help. Off to the e-waste recycle it is then. :(
No reason to landfill it. Still a very functional unit for searching, streaming, and other uses. Offer it here in the classifieds to someone for a good price (free plus shipping even) and it will sell.

Have you started here?

Menu --> Database --> Import --> RadioReference Web (Subscription Requ

It's one of all time best analog scanners, it uses varicap tracking filters in its front-end bandpass, and usually go for $100-150 at auction sites.

I got the 789 linked to the Pro Scan on the computer and can use the remote connection. I'm having trouble connecting the computer so that I can download what's in the radio and then create a revised program for the radio. RMason the computer tells me I need to have an open file to download the radio's memory. I created a file but can't seem to connect to it. Ideas?

To confirm: Here is how to open a database from https://www.proscan.org/ProScan_Manual.pdf
Are you getting an error message?

Before data in a database can be uploaded to the scanner or downloaded from the scanner, a database file must be opened.

Before opening a database, make sure the Scanner Type is correct for your model, this will ensure the right database format is used.

1.Go to the Menu --> Database.

2.If an exiting database has been created before: Go to the Menu --> Database --> Open then navigate to the folder, then

select the file, and click the OK button.

3.If creating a new database file: Go to the Menu --> Database --> New then navigate to the folder, type in a file name, and

click the OK button.

In case you're not aware, the ProScan manual can be accessed here: menu --> Support --> Manual

{edit}
I would get the virtual display in ProScan working 1st. To do that, put the 780 into remote mode to download and upload. See the 2nd image.
After that, open a database file before downloading from the scanner. See the 1st image.
