how come when i'm listening to a trunked system, it sometimes cuts out in mid-conversation. it's not a problem with my scanner, because both of mine do that. and it doesn't sound at all like a reception problem (i get very good reception, and when it does this, it just cuts off with out any static). the conversation doesn't start again until it changes frequencies. i know the police still hear each other, so how come i can't. this rarely happens, but i'm just curious. any ideas?

Sounds as if the control channel changes or the control channel might turn off for a fraction of a second. When that happens it might take a few seconds for the scanner to re-acquire the control channel and resume trunking.
If you're really curious, note the control channel freq., then when that happens see if the control channel freq. has changed.
