Post changing to meet community needs; New format welcomes readers Tuesday

John Chambers / Daily Post Managing Editor
Local News - Friday, May 18, 2007 @ 09:00

The Daily Post will change its publishing schedule and name starting Tuesday May 22.

Beginning Tuesday, the Daily Post will become The Lindsay Post, publishing every Tuesday and Friday.

Publisher Darren Murphy and senior managers made the decision after reviewing the paper's existing business model.

"Over the last several years reader needs and habits have changed which has led to a review of how The Post can better serve readers and advertisers in this community" said Murphy who is also publisher and general manager of The Peterborough Examiner.

Friday's announcement comes in conjunction with a move from the Post's home at 15 William St.
North. to its renovated offices at 17 William St. South.

The move to a twice weekly paper wasn't easy, however based on reader needs and trends, Post management believe the combination of old favourites and new features will be welcomed by current and future readers of The Lindsay Post.

The Lindsay Post will continue to publish as a broadsheet newspaper with many of the features Daily Post readers have come to expect. Tusday's paper will include the TV Listings, comics, crossword, classifieds, along with various columnists, while Friday will continue to include Spotlight, real estate and classified sections, and some new features.

The local news continues to be the main focus for the newsroom.

Murphy noted the changes are positive, progressive steps forward to ensure the continued success and viability of The Post.

"We are changing to meet the dynamic needs of our community and these changes will result in a better newspaper overall," Murphy said. "The Post will continue to support the community as only we can and we will continue to be the number one source for local news and information about the city of Kawartha Lakes."

Current subscribers will benefit by having existing subscriptions extended to reflect the reduced publishing days, ensuring people who have home delivery will continue to receive The Lindsay Post every Tuesday and Friday.

Readers will still be able to receive their daily news updates by visiting www.thepost.ca. A number of exciting changes are also planned for the website later this summer.

Tough times for newspapers across the board...and smaller community papers probably feel the pinch more than the big guys do.

<media analyst hat on>

I think the world is changing from broadcast to narrowcast...the trend seems to be starting to shift from a model where professionals in the news biz 'gatekeep' and determine what's relevant, interesting and newsworthy for the audience to a model where the audience has a greater say in what's relevant and the journos deliver what the audience wants. Some newspapers...especially ones without vast resources to rely on...are likely going to have even greater problems in the future. And that's too bad. I like newspapers.

Yup. Nothing can beat picking up a paper and reading it. I've got thousands of pages of books in PDF format, but nothing "feels" the same as picking up a book and reading it. I don't think all the technology in the world will ever replace that. Remember when e-Books were all the rage? That is, a laptop-type device that looked like a book? Notice how those aren't flying off the shelves? :)

Probably the biggest selling point for newspapers as a medium is the fact that it's a physical construct. You can touch and feel it, re-read it as many times as you like and develop a good understanding of what's written. Newspapers, when done right, provide details and context that TV and radio news can't do easily.

In some ways perhaps people are searching for that context in their news and information today. On the surface it seems like there are more and more details that make up news events these days, but I also get the feeling that a lot of people are getting turned off: "Does this affect me? Why do I care?" Perhaps the news cycle is so short now that the contextual part of a story comes later than the audience would prefer...

The natural antidote to that whirlwind of 'breaking news' is a newspaper. I hope the subscription-buying public smartens up and supports their newspaper of choice again...especially the little local ones!

Ok...I'll stop boring you all now.

Graeme: I could not agree more.It feels 'right' to read the paper.
We are lucky in our area, we have some good (Star) fiesty (Sun) and interesting (Spec).
I gave up my subscription cause the Spec does not have good box scores (important!) and the GTA versaions of the T.O. papers pulblish too early. I always get a paper in the city and cant wait to have a coffee and the weekend papers in our backyard.
As for the Post, I saw Montral lose its best (IMO) paper in 1979 and a few other enlgish daily/weeklies, sad time.

I have purchased a subsciption in the Burlington Post and enjoy it for local news.

Since this topic doesn't appear to have anything to do with scanning, it gets locked.

Guys, the Tavern is the more appropriate place for items with nothing to do with scanning.
