Today while four wheeling up Farmington Canyon in Davis County, suddenly there were several other four wheel drives headed up the canyon behind us toward the radar towers. So I stepped on it and stayed out front. We got up to the towers and discovered the Davis County Sheriff's Search & Rescue setting up a command post for a search in the mountains.

The search was for a man who had gone missing and was suicidal. The searchers had to go in on foot into deep snow on the North East slopes. A storm blew in and first it was raining and then turned to snow, very light but snow all the same. As the storm moved in the cloud level began enveloping the entire tops of the mountains in the search area.

The DPS Helicopter was also on site and conducting an areal search also. We left as the weather worsened and night fell. I really have to hand it to the Search & Rescue Volunteers, they are one hell of a bunch of guys. I pray all turns out well in this situation, but it doesn't look good.

I have not heard any outcome of this situation as of yet. Nothing on the news. The Davis County Sheriff's Search & Rescue operates now on encrypted 800 MHz so monitoring them will not be possible on the scanner. As we left the scene last evening at night fall, the weather had become extremely poor and cold at that high of an elevation, so there was high danger of hypothermia to the Search & Rescue personel and potential victim.

I am hearing something on LZ1 between ground units and a chopper that appears to be searching for someone.

Do you think this the Davis Couty Sheriff's SAR Team incident or the search in SLC for the child who fell into the canal? Neither situation looks good at all...

Wow! That is news. I had no idea. When did the Davis SAR go encrypted and why? ...do you know?

I was talking to some of the DCSAR guys yesterday. According to them they just made the switch very recently. I am sure they did it for the same reasons as other rescue orgs and helo rescue, supposedly for confidentiality etc. But I think their real reason is to keep the media and civilian looky loo's away.

I can buy that reasoning. Just look around at the scene of an auto crash and you will find "rubberneckers" interfering with traffic flow all in order to satisfy their morbid curiosity. It is human nature.

Allot of times on rescue and emergency scenes you get well intentioned civilians that want to help out but end up be a hinderance or liability... As a former medic I cannot even begin to tell you how important scene containment and control is. The agencies already have enough to deal with and don't need someone else to have to rescue or search for.

They found the missing person alive! He was found late this afternoon of the backside of the mountains near Morgan. He was found with no shirt or shoes and was extremely disoriented. I think the fact he was on the backside of the mountain in the lower elevation may have kept him alive through the night. It was below freezing, windy, wet and cold at the summit of the mountains. When we came down into the valley last night the wind had stopped and it was 60 degrees. Not tropical balmy weather, but survivable. I am really glad it turned out good.
