I have two different scanners that make the DCS tone of one frequency I monitor (about 155 MHz) audible at home. The signal is otherwise fine. Other frequencies originating from the same and other towers do not have this problem. It is a minor annoyance I have tolerated for some time.

I have physically inspected my antenna, connections and cable - all looks OK. Another antenna and cable also produces the same sound. The radio with the S-meter shows all the bars. I took one radio and the second antenna near the transmitting tower (15 miles away) and did not hear the tone.

I am not sure what is causing this. I am wondering if a gain antenna would help.

Any explanations with suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Are you sure that it's not a misadjustment on the transmitter?

There's one frequency that I listen to here on a Maratrac, which I am pretty sure has a high-pass filter to try to tame the tone (in my case analog) and the tone is still quite loud.

Sounds like a misadjusted transmitter.

The antenna would have no effect on the audio.

Hi all,

At first glance it sounds like a transmitter problem but on closer inspection up pops this little mystery.

"I took one radio and the second antenna near the transmitting tower (15 miles away) and did not hear the tone."

That raises the question of is this the only location where you get proper reception or does the noise go away outside the house? If the latter you have some local interference that may become apparent with the DCS disabled, that is while using carrier squelch. If the former I'm stumped and can only speculate.

If it's not terribly annoying just put up with it, some transmitters I listen to use some awfully heavy PL tone modulation that is audible but I'm not about modifying the audio chain in the scanner.
