I wanted to start up some conversation about current DEA frequencies in AZ. In the past, DEA was very active in Phoenix on UHF analog frequency 418.950 156.7 PL. This frequency was often in the clear and sometimes encrypted. There have also been several other UHF analog frequencies monitored in Phoenix with ops in the clear. Within the last few months, the UHF frequencies have gone mostly silent. In Phoenix, I have been noting some new federal VHF frequencies popping up with a NAC of 156 (which has been documented nationwide as DEA). These frequencies are full time encrypted and are assumed to be new DEA frequencies in Phoenix. Many of the new frequencies seem to be linked “Vote Scan” systems like what is used by Border Patrol.

DEA Phoenix?
170.6625 NAC 156 (encrypted)
170.9500 NAC 156 (encrypted)
170.7375 NAC 156 (encrypted) – Linked Vote Scan?
172.2125 NAC 156 (encrypted) – Linked Vote Scan?

There was also a recent DEA submission for Tucson using UHF frequencies, but the submission was not clear if these were Analog or P25:
409.400 (417.050 input)
413.975
414.200

There I have notes of potential other UHF frequencies used in the Tucson area:
414.700
418.900

Can anyone confirm the frequencies above, or any other DEA frequencies in AZ?

DEA in some regions has been moving from UHF to VHF

Lokks like you have some work cut out for you and your fellow AZ Federal Monitors

Many of the old UHF Repeaters are dual mode and in some regions the analog use has still been seen

409.4000 R is $9xx Series NAC and should be FPS not DEA
Some sites do have an exception to the 9 Mhz input due to interference, unsure if this is one of them

FYI...most all Federal P25 frequencies have a NAC of 156

I have logged hundreds of federal freqs in Phoenix. Many of the identified ones have been posted here:

The VHF freqs at the top of this thread are the only ones I have logged with NAC 156 in Phoenix. Based on what people have documented nationwide makes me suspect these are DEA.

It is not uncommon, where-as in the past Freqs were used by One Agency, for frequencies to be shared with a different NAC in a geographic area in the current day of more RF use in smaller areas.

ie:
171.7250 $707 - NPS Cape Cod National Sea Shore [being on the Coast and generally experiencing VHF Lift]
shares with
The State of Maines VHF TRS [3 different sites]
NPS - Maryland
ICE - NJ

I no longer think that 417.050 is the input to 409.400. I'm hearing encrypted traffic on 417.050 that does not sound like P25 and nothing on 409.4 at the same time. I believe 409.4 is FPS Tucson also. This morning there was some quick messages on 417.050 that sounded like the older DEA type encryption used on their old common channels. Is 417.050 reported as DEA anywhere else?
Also had strong P25 encrypted traffic on 164.7375 recently. I know that 164.750 was an FBI input used in San Diego, this sounded like a repeater out, not an input. Also 163.3875 in use, encrypted, maybe a BP Tac?

417.0500 Yup - Cumberland County area of NJ

What NAC are you getting for the VHF of 7375 and 3875, that would help...

DEA began the transition to VHF P25 about 5-6 years ago which started in the Dallas area. NAC 156 is accurate nationwide. The UHF network was gradually dismantled by region. The agency acquired APX 7000 series radios which in many areas were enabled on state/local 700/800 trunked systems via subscriber agreements prior to activation of the new repeaters. In several offices, DEA was given dedicated TGs on these systems which are still in use in many areas. Voted repeaters were added onto the FBI's upgraded/expanded radio network which now includes DEA and USMS. Although agency-specific NACs and encryption keys are used, many locations share each other's designated repeaters with coordination through the comm centers. I know in DEA's case, all the P25 radios were "strapped coded" when programmed.

In some Regions.... not all have gone VHF, many are still active UHF

As to $156 - No not a 100% confirmation it is DEA

$156 is also used by BP and possibly others

A NAC/PL Alone
A Freq Alone
is never confirmation of an agency using a frequency

As to the FBI and USM - Yes,
but what do you have to provide/proof of FBI sharing with DEA ??

And NO, not all radios are strapped ENC for the DEA

After monitoring for a week, I can confirm that 409.4000 MHz, NAC910, is definitely the Federal Protective Service and not the DEA in Tucson. I was unable to confirm the repeater input, but will attempt on my next trip.
