Dead BC996T ?

Hey folks,

I updated the firmware in my BC996T today. After the update - all was working fine.

I come back in the room later in the afternoon - and the radio is dead and just sitting at a blank lighted screen. I power off the radio, then back on - nothing - no lights or anything on the display.

I removed the power from the back, then plugged back in, and powered up - and I briefly see a distorted message that says "Memory Clear Please Wait" - then nothing.

I've tried the 2,9,Hold keys on startup to no avail. Any ideas?

I would try the update again. Did use use the current Update loader program BC_VUP installation program from Unidens website ??

I tried that - it doesn't even want to go into firmware update mode.

Man that sucks. Ive been wanting to get a new digital and thought I had it somewhat narrowed down. To the Uniden or the GRE. But after reading several posts seems like the Uniden 996 has more than enough bugs. And the GRE hasn't been in the field long enough with the newer models. Hope ya can get things worked out Lindsay its more than frustrating when ya have problems as you got. Guess Im going to put off things longer and see what happens. Good Luck Hoser

Hello,

My suggestion may not work due to your description of your issue but it is worth a try. Unplug the power leaving adapter plug attached to unit. Turn unit on. Hold the L/O and 6 Keys while plugging wallwart or whatever you use to power unit and see if the unit returns to Firmware Update Mode or Backlight screen.

And re-set (hold 2-9-HOLD/RESUME keys as you power on) doesn't work either?

Check the ribbon cable that goes to the display daughter board. These tend to work loose and cause a blank display.

I had a similar issue with a BC15, I re-seated the ribbon cable and all was well with the world again.

Yea - no joy... I think it might have died. It's been super dry here in San Antonio and static electricity has been rampant - I don't recall actually "killing it" - I just came in the room and it was at a blank lighted screen - powering off the radio resulted in a dead radio after that. I had just happened to have updated the firmware that morning..
