Okay, so I'm sitting on top of a parking garage, looking at where the DMR Antenna should be, and this is the console file I get out of it. Note the multitude of errors. I am on frequency and have everything setup right in SDR# and DSD+...

Where does one go from here? Sorry for the long LOG file. A full LOG file is attached.

So the signal should've been quite strong. Did you have the RF gain set appropriately?

A raw audio sample will get you better answers.

The signal was booming into the SDR# scope. Next time I'm down that way I'll try and get an audio sample and post.

I know you say you're "on frequency" but with digital formats, even being just 1 ppm off-frequency can be more than enough to cause the kinds of errors in decoding you're seeing - I say that from experience myself decoding DMR/TRBO comms and just 1 ppm off-frequency causes it in a multitude of situations across multiple systems and frequencies. Now while I don't have one of the newer TCXO-based SDR devices to help alleviate almost all of the necessity to set the ppm to some large margin (my two RTL sticks use 49 and 55 ppm), even those TCXO models ain't perfect and can be off as much as 2 ppm either way so it's incredibly important to be as close as possible to be on frequency with an accurate ppm adjustment.

It's something relatively easy to verify so maybe check on that while you're at it. And of course if the signal is "too loud" as it's being fed to DSD+ that can also cause problems because of distortion issues - look at adjusting the volume of SDR#'s volume slider to 40-50% of scale and see how that might affect the decodes.

Assuming audio filtering was turned off, did you try different bandwidth settings and ppm adjustments? If the signal was strong my guess would be too narrow or not centered.

Thanks guys, I'll have to try a few different settings the next time I'm there. My PPM is set to -53 as that's what the previous owner had said the good setting was at.

All audio filtering was turned off, and it's a narrowband channel but I did try a wideband setting as well "just for giggles".

I've never encountered an RTL stick with such a high negative ppm but I suppose it's possible, most every ppm setting I've ever seen was on the positive side. I'm not sure what you're using to calibrate the ppm setting (meaning which frequency) but there are several choices:

- NOAA weather in the VHF range (whatever the strongest frequency in your area might be)
- 470.310 MHz which is one of the carriers for the US ATSC broadcast television signals (all digital now)
- any carrier or control channel frequency that you can verify against the FCC database to know the exact frequency (pretty sure you know this already)

and others so it won't be difficult to do. If you're using traditional RTL sticks - that's another presumption since you said the stick you have should be at -53 ppm so that's way way past anything a TCXO model would suffer from, they're usually within 2 ppm of zero (+2/+1/0/-1/-2) - you may find that the ppm itself 'drifts' based on the frequency or range you're tuning. I know that for my sticks (49 and 55) I have to adjust the ppm slightly if I'm tuning down into the VHF civilian air range (116-136 MHz) by about 1 ppm - anything above 400 MHz and they're pretty rock solid at 49 and 55 so, just something else to account for if needed.

And of course the audio levels can play a part in the decode as well - too little getting to DSD+ or too much and it can cause the errors seen in your post above. DSD+ is remarkably adept at handling a wide variety of input levels, but even so it doesn't hurt to ensure you're providing it with the best working signal possible.

I agree, -53 sounds unusual. All my sticks are +50 to +90. Use SDR# and a known frequency such as NOAA weather radio to calibrate your stick. Then, when actually monitoring the DMR signal you are interested in, tweak the calibration after the stick is warmed up. That thin red line should be on the peak of your signal.

Thanks guys! I'll bring the PPM to 0 and see what happens. I got this stick from a retired commercial guy who is also a ham radio operator, hence how I know him.

For reference the stick reads on the front EZCAP DVB-TFM DAB
