I am by no means an expert, or very knowledgeable in the air traffic control tower infrastructure. With the tower being in close proximity to the aircraft, wouldn’t it be prudent to have a handheld transceiver available for some type of emergency like this, or would it be useless?

I don't understand why a tower loses radio communications. There is no reason why there can't be antennas on the towers and the radios right there in the tower. If a radio fails, you just swap it out or go to a backup. There is no reason to need to rely on a link to some other location. I am a firm believer in keep it simple stupid.

The outage occurred at a remote site of the Denver ARTCC which covers 285,000 square miles in 9 states. I don't think a handheld at a controllers desk is going to help much.

I guess a little HT won’t cover a 285,000 square mile area. LOL. I did a little reading and as I figured it is a little more complicated the just using a an HT.

It is the media...no one wants to read how "Everything is functioning correctly"...Only hyped up stories make news. You will have no problem.
