So, for a while I've been looking for a speaker to use with my scanner on my desk at work and I've been coming up empty from what I've tried or found in searches.
Ideally I'd like it to meet these criteria:
I've tried some computer speakers and for whatever reason they don't seem to match up. One did (a 'soundbar' that mounts to the bottom of a dell monitor) but it wasn't the ideal setup; I would prefer it be a stand-alone speaker and not a 'bar' or attached to a monitor. Also, for whatever reason, it won't turn all the way down...at the lowest setting, the audio is still very audible but if I turn the scanner down more, turning the speaker up to a volume loud enough to clearly hear results in a buzz/hum from he speaker.
I know dispatch centers often have speakers setup in front of each dispatch station/console that have a knob on them but I assume those are proprietary to whatever console they're using.
I know some would say "just use the volume knob on the scanner" but, as has happened on a few of the Uniden scanners I've had over the years, the one on the scanner in my office is beginning to wear out - sometimes turning it a few notches does nothing and I would prefer to leave it set and then use the other volume control to turn it up/down as needed (or off when someone walks up to my desk to discuss something) to save the knob on the scanner from completely wearing out.
I may be looking for a unicorn here but I thought I'd ask. It could be that I've been using the wrong terms when doing searches.
Ideally I'd like it to meet these criteria:
- Fairly small (say, somewhere 4" to 6" or 7" tall)
- Have a volume knob on it
- Have decent to good sound
