I've used "drive wiper"(7 passes) in the CCleaner software on my usb thumb drives. I don't know how effective it is though, as I have reused the drives over again.

10 Seconds in a microwave should do it. And it'd be fun !

Putting a CD or DVD in the microwave on high with write side facing up and 5 seconds on high while watching through the microwave window is a lot of fun but likely to make a wife angry. The usb memory on my key chain never carries anything I would be concerned about if it was lost--been that way since I had it. Neither does one I keep in my car-it has music and other reference items and install programs that I may want while on the road but no personal item.
