Hello. I recently moved to Abington and set up my new Diamond d3000n on the side of my house. It’s up about 20ft from the ground. Ran it with RG6Q for about 50ft to my SDS200. When I lived in hull I had another diamond discone antenna set up similar fashion and could hear Boston perfectly clear (granted I had basically line of sight directly over the water) I’ve noticed recently that Boston police district E comes in a bit scratchy. Most other districts, EMS, and fire come in clear enough to understand with little static. BPD District E patrols the south side of the city. Any reason anyone can come up with as to why the district closest to me would be scratchy but all others are readable with light static? I can also pick up all the way down to Fall River, police and fire no problem. Very clear. Any ideas ?

In Hull you were around 9 miles from the center tower, in Abington you are 17.5 miles away. That's 7.5 miles outside the 10 mile range of the signal center. The closest tower to Hull is around 8 miles (mostly water between), the closest tower to Abington is around 12.5 miles (lots of buildings, houses, trees and a ridge between). If the towers are tuned to direct signal back to the center of town, that will be a problem.

Discones do not perform well in the 800Mhz band, and only have an effective range of 10-15 miles on a good day with any kinda of interference around they are terrible in my experience. An Omni X antenna, or a 5-18 element yagi would probably be your best bet.

Just my two cents worth.

I greatly appreciate your 2 cents! I’ve been wanting to build a yagi so maybe this is my opportunity

A little off topic, but curious- you still receive them (FRPD) now that they've gone to P25? I live a lot closer to them than you do and I'm finding that reception is a lot more....unreliable... than it was on analog.

SDS100/200 are extremely interference prone and a specific frequency or two can have a problem from being blocked by another frequency that have mixed in the receiver chip with spurious signals to produce a third frequency that lands on your problematic frequency. Try using IFX on a badly received frequency and also the different filter settings for that site or conventional department, as those settings will shift where the mixed frequencies appear in the frequency band.
