Can someone explain the difference between a Mobile Relay (FB2) and a Fixed Relay (FX2).

A mobile relay relays mobile units. A fixed relay relays fixed units (base stations). The Okla. Highway Patrol has both in operation, although I'm not sure which locations are using what these days, nor do I know what the FCC licenses read. Used to be one up by Blackwell, and also one by Bartlesville, but I don't know the current status of either.

Thanks Mark. Makes perfect sense!

According to the database, the one by Blackwell is 159.21, and is an FX2. The problem is, I travel up that way quite a bit, and only hear the mobiles repeated on this freq. So, they are using a Fixed Relay to relay mobile traffic.

The freq I have for Bartlesville 155.445, and is an FB2. I don't travel this way as much, but if my memory serves me correctly, I think this was repeating mobile units as well. The only two repeaters I recall hearing the base on, are 155.46 in Claremore (FB2) and 154.68 in Vinita (FX1). So, the Vinita base traffic I hear makes sense, but hearing the base on 155.46 in Claremore doesn't.

Do you think it's possible that they have changed from their original intent when they licensed these freqs?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that many users (not just the Okla. Highway Patrol) have altered the operations of these sites from those originally licensed. I personally know of one entity (not PS) that has converted one of their UHF allocations (licensed FB) to a repeater operation (FB2). Many agencies figure they already have the frequency on a locally (or in this case - statewide) exclusive basis and what they do with it is their business. That's why I don't really concern myself with minor details like this, it's the actual use, not the licensed use, that I'm concerned with. After all, who's going to complain to the FCC that the OHP is using an allocation as a mobile relay instead of a remote base (or whatever).

Exactly! Well, I guess you can't count on the database all the time. Thanks!
