I received a Close Call hit form a U.S. Border Patrol Unit that was
close by. The hit was on 162.900 CTCSS 110.9.

We haven't been able to listen to the Border Patrol for about 5 years
because they went to digital. And I assume they are also encrypted. I have never heard them use this frequency in the past.

The hit sounded like a rush of white noise. On some of the other old
frequencies they use to use for their analog communications all I
hear now is the white noise rush and squawking sounds.

I presume these would be the sounds of a digital transmission. Is
there any way to tell if they are encrypted?

So far this is the only digital in my area. I wouldn't want to go
out and spend $500 just to find out that I can't listen because they
are encrypted.

Digital sounds like BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Encryption sounds iether like white noise, or a combined buzzy white noise.

The PL you mentioned is not usually a PL seen on conventional digital.. its in the 90's something for the PL on APCO P-25 conventional.

97.7 or something like that....

There is no PL tone associated with APCO-25 Digital Conventional channels. If there's a PL tone associated with what he's hearing, it's full-time encryption

A while back I noticed one of the agents was using what I believe was a Motorola XTS3000. Also on one of the old frequencies there is what sounds like a recorded transmission that transmits quite often: Siera, Alpha, November - Siera, Alpha, November.

Could they be using a non APCO25 digital system? I realy would like to be able to listen to them. Since 911 they are really active in my area

here is no PL withP25.

There are NAC (Network Access Codes) but they are in the digital data and not tones.

There might be some PL detectors that are falsed by the digital signal, but that would be an artifact of the decoder and the modulation, not a true "PL signal"

Sometimes it sounds like white noise and other times I hear what sounds like MDC1200 ANI sounds with no voice heard at all. The MDC1200 sometimes repeats over and over for several seconds (squawk, squawk, squawk, squawk. etc. ) Click on the link below to hear what MDC1200 sounds like.
Any ideas on what I am hearing???
