Not to hijack this thread, but I’m in a similar boat. I’d like to listen to Ayer PD and have been shopping for an SDS100 on eBay. Ayer switched maybe a year or two ago and haven’t gone to encryption, but I noticed a few have. Seeing as Ayer just switched is it unlikely they’d add encryption at this point? I’ve seen more departments closer to Boston go that way but I guess I’m curious if p25 seems to be a midpoint before encryption or if most towns that go encrypted do it during the initial switch over to digital.

Just don’t wanna buy a $600 doorstop.
The only department that recently went P25 encrypted was Taunton in Bristol County. Lawrence switched a couple of years ago.
The SDS is nice if Ayer is using LSM. We've had about 25-30 departments switch to P25 in the last year, with Taunton being the only fully E town from them.

Taunton does operate in the clear if other agencies are coming in, but that's a suboptimal solution. A couple of weeks ago a couple of D Troop units were trying to go to Taunton on an assist. That's when the troopers found out that Taunton was encrypted. Taunton doesn't appear to activate the clear mode automatically. Responding agencies have to request that via phone or interop channel.

At least that's what the dispatcher from MSP Middleboro said on D-Patrol-1.

They will only operate in the clear on their channel 2 and only for occasional interop. But they are fully encrypted, as I stated.
