Guys/Gals/Ladies/Gentleman, I have a Kenwood 74 and a Yaesu 2dr. Is there a way to have simplex digital voice between these two radios?

Not to hijack this tread with a somewhat related post, but the guys in my area that hang out on one of the two meter simplex channels in the upper part of the band talk in C4FM digital on Friday night's.

Going forward I don't use C4FM too much, as I like DMR better, but do enjoy listening to them talking digital simplex, as it sounds great. I found at this fact just from working late one Friday evening and hearing them. I mostly don't have anything to add to conversation and have talked with them a few times in C4FM. Once and awhile one of the guys will come up on the on C4FM at other times also on the frequency.

Thanks, You guys have any suggestions. I have a Kenwood TH-D74, a Yaesu FT-2DR and a Kenwood D710ga as well as some Baufangs.

I wanted APRS but would like to do simplex digital. We talk on repeaters and simplex. Simplex when camping/hunting/fishing and Repeaters when we are in a Pandemic Mode. Any suggestions on what I can change?

My 3 sons and I. I will need a 2nd Mobile rig for my sons truck. Would really like simplify things.

There are rumors from time to time about a radio with two or more digital modes, but nothing to show for it. For now simple is analog or outfitting everyone with the same digital mode radio. I know using my Yaesu 400 with repeaters I get the bearing and distance to the person I am talking to over repeaters. Not all contacts will have that information and I'm not sure what they have done on their end. Simplex should work the same. I have a DStar radio too, but don't recall if distance and bearing is displayed, but likely similar to Yaesu.
Good Luck,
Mike

Not all Yaesu Fusion radios have GPS. The lower tier ones FT70 and FT7250 don't have an internal GPS, so these don't have the ability to send the position. It not based on the operator, but what radio they are using.

How do you like the Yaesu 400? Of the many many features I would like, being able to see the screen with my 50 yo eyes is important.

I have a few years on you and the screen does have advantages for us. Mine was bought before the XDR came out and has terrible GPS time to lock performance. That was fixed with the 'X'. It was so bad it has become my base station VHF/UHF radio. I can setup in memory a fixed Lat/Long position and use that instead of GPS data. I suspect by 'operator' selection I can block my location from being sent using digital modes. If buying used just be careful about earlier models and GPS long time to lock issues. It was a frequent and wide spread issue that people complained about.

I do the same with the 400DR in the house with fixed position and the XDR in the vehicle. Also, yes on the easier to read with 50+ year old eyes.

On your follow-up question, the Yaesu Fusion is easy to use and I prefer the digital modes it offers. I have the D74A as well and like it, especially with the equalizer, but I use C4FM (Yaesu Fusion) much more often with the Yaesu mobiles and the FT2 and FT3 handhelds.

In particular with your planned use in mind, I recommend you review what the Yaesu Group Monitor feature offers.

You'll find it in the manual for your FT2DR as well as most of the recent Yaesu radios. I prefer the PDF manual in order to do a quick search for whatever I'm looking for, but to each their own. There are probably various videos people have done as well, but the manual is recommended. Have fun!
