I live in a valley that has 70ft tall trees all around. I would like to put a Tram 1410 Discone Antenna up. My property goes from the road at ground level about 100 ft down to my house. I could mount the antenna on a pole up near the road but the coax run might be up to 150 ft with the loss in the coax and still not be above large trees. I could mount the antenna on a pole near the house but that would have a shorter coax run but it would 25 ft below the road level. I was wondering if I could put a rope up in a large tree and hang the discone by the rope above ground level but closer to my house to shorten the coax run. I want to use the antenna for SDR scanning for Aircraft,Police and 2mtr/440 transmitting. So what is the right balance of coax loss ant vs height above ground ?

I've strung one up in a tree on a comm deployment. Worked fine. The trick is using a short piece of conduit that will fit between the horizontal elements. Drill a hole in the top of the conduit and install an eye bolt, and feed the support rope/cord through the eye bolt.

I would say the short answer is short run with lowest loss cable. Is is possible to setup a in-close setup to collect data and temporally move it to a tree and work battery portable at the base?
Good Luck, come back and less us know the outcome.
