Reno County is facing a shortage of emergency dispatch workers.
911 Director Mary Messamore says the county needs 18 full-time
dispatchers, but has only seven, and some of them worked more than 1,000 hours of overtime last year. The dispatchers handle every law enforcement, fire and ambulance department in the county.
Dispatchers generally work 12-hour days in a closed-off basement
room. Last year they handled an average of nearly 150 emergency calls a day from 911 lines, and thousands more calls from law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical services.
Starting pay ranges from about $13 an hour to more than $17 an hour. Messamore says it takes a special kind of person to do the job.
Any other agencies in KS having problems finding dispatchers?
