what is "dat"
does this indicate a data transmission?

Check this post, should answer your question.

You must live near a military base. When you get in the 380.0000 to 399.9875 range, you monitoring a Land Mobile Radio (LMR) system. They use Control Channels so you have to search the range and find what the control channels are. What area are you in? I'm sure some with more experance can talk you through Control Channel search so you can find them. Then you will be able to hear what is being said.

What you can do to start off is, read on how to do a Custom Search. Then you can practice by setting up Custom 1 to search 380.0000 to 399.9875.

I'm not the best when it comes to giving details on how to do it, I just know how from months of practice.

i set up a custom search from 380.0000 to 399.9875 and set the control channel to off. the scanner locked on 380.5750 and displayed "dat" but i did not hear any audio.

i then changed the control channel to on and the scanner locked on 380.5750.
the scanner displayed the following:
sid: 0010h - 0404
id: _ _ _ _ _ _ _
380.5750
i still did not hear any audio.

i have no idea what the above display means.
any help would be appreciated

Create a system and enter the frequency you found as the control channel. Set id mode to search. See if this heips. I am in your area and am getting some hits doing this with the frequency you posted.
