Alinco: DJ-582 display issue

I have old DJ-580T and DJ-582 HTs and haven’t used them in years. These are from the 1990s. Obviously, their stock batteries are shot but I have them working with dummy battery cases fed with either AA batteries or a 12V power supply. On my DJ-582, I notice that the display randomly either disappears or shows weird characters that, to fix, I have to turn the radio off and back on. Sometimes this issue happens repeatedly. Sometimes, simply pressing key buttons causes the display to get weird (either blank or show weird characters) although the rx still works. Does anyone happen to know what is causing this? I know there’s an internal battery but I think this is used to store memories. I don't have an issue with the memories as those I stored over 25+ years ago are still stored.

I haven’t decided if I want to replace these radios with something newer but since I don’t get on VHF/UHF much, I am trying to see if I can get these old ones working properly. The DJ-580T doesn’t have the display disappearing issue that the DJ-582 has. The DJ-582 was my wife’s HT and she used it little so it is in better physical condition.

Can anyone assist? Thanks.

The memory retention battery is probably dead, and needs to be replaced, Or the flex to the display is having issues

You think the battery is dead even though the memories are properly still saved from 25+ years ago? Not sure if the display issues are related to this battery or not. I would think if the battery was dead the radio would not save freqs. saved in the radio. I will check to see if I can find a replacement battery for this. Thanks.

It's not the internal battery. I took the radio apart and got it to work properly with the 2 halves apart and I can press all sorts of buttons but when I re-assemble it back together with all screws, etc. in place, the display still goes weird. Must be a tiny loose connection somewhere. I looked at all of the solder joints that I could see with a magnifying glass and saw nothing of concern.. I gave up.
