From what I understand SLED now controls DNR's old helo, and DNR has control of the state's law enforcement planes. According to the Island Packet, SLED has 5 helicopters and is in the process of selling one. You can hear SLED's helicopters on their main channel (154.665), the Co-op channel with DNR (158.91) as well as various talkgroups on Palmetto 800.

Since everyone's got a little different "take" on the state's air assets, here's mine.

My understanding is that the Governor's executive order of about two years ago called for the state to reduce it's fleet of planes and helicopters by half.

SLED would take control of the helicopters. Forestry was to take control of the fixed wing assets.

My understanding is that DNR occasionally needs a helicopter with a special bucket for restocking fish in lakes, but, otherwise, doesn't use aircraft.

Forestry flies almost daily fixed wing missions to observe for forest fire situations. Some of these missions, though, involve contract personnel and aircraft.

Forestry has an agreement with the state National Guard for the latter agency to provide helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, as needed, for fire suppression.

Forestry also has mutual aid agreements with the federal government, as well as neighboring states, to share aircraft assets as needed.

Both SC and now GA use a private company for all forestry related helo missions. Georgia DNR and forestry use 'Helicopters Express'. It is much cheaper for the state to contract out and not pay for maint. and full time pilots.
