• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Do truckers still use CB Radios?

Might not be "in the game" in the modern sense but just as good overall and far more reliable, if you can hear me and I hear you it's a winner either way and it didn't need the modern tech to do that.

I know of a couple of Galaxy radios have been in constant service since early 2000’s in big trucks. Service that would’ve destroyed your sets. So what is “reliability?”

Your sets wouldn’t have the ears, mobile.
No hiding behind base station antenna.

Add this to what you have today. And a hi-Fi speaker. You’ll hear the difference, base or not. I’ve out-ranged a couple of base stations with a Freightliner.

Would still need to clean up TX with an N/C mic due to wind & cab noise. An RK56 would do.

Set it up on the passenger seat. The way I run big truck mobile. You’ll need a foot-warmer, too.

Mobile is a world of its own for reliability and performance.

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

This thread is over 6 years old with almost 300 responses and we still don't know the answer to the OP's question. :)

They do; at least here they do.

My AO covers half the state of KY and part of northern TN. I exchange information with truck drivers of all kinds EVERY day. Lots of locals hauling rock, logs, lumber, and coal... and Lots of OTR drivers coming into and out of the distribution centers, industrial parks, and rail yards.

Passive listening won't find most of them. Call out the warning that the mobile scales are down at the end of the four lane and see how many radios come online.

Trucks here are using cbs for sure, Monday - Friday from before daylight till 2-3 pm, I can hear gravel pit & asphalt plant on 19 & 3. Put out a warning “man in the black Tahoe sitting southbound past xyz” and get a few “thanks driver”. There’s a lot of drivers listening for valuable info.
